Bakki plastic or stainless
Hi All hope safe and well. Considering adding shower to pond, if a choice between plastic or stainless and price the same which would you go for. Also what benefits do either give, trying to sell to myself and the Mrs before affecting view of garden. Many thanks in advance for any thought or replys Dean !!

I have a stainless bakki and want to get another.
i don’t think they look as nice as the plastic ones but think they let more air in around the and can take more weight without bending or warping (bhm is heavy 80kg in my shower + water).
if I wasn’t running the water though a high rate and ran it more like a trickle tower not sure it would make a lot of difference.

I wouldn't have a preference as I was build a cover to disguise it and a act as a insulation for winter

Yes mine is covered with twin wall, i was going to get another to put next to it and run two and box them in together.
i was thinking I could stick one large manifold across them both.

I would go stainless all day. They are generally 3x the cost though. If you find them cheap please do share as I would like one
Stainless also retain a good resale value and I would say would last a lifetime. I do worry about the plastic welded stuff, not from any bad experience just they look a little flimsy
All imo

I run 2 stainless and one plastic on my pond. I also run 3 plastic on my vats.
The stainless are bigger and can hold 4 tiers easier which allows for greater flow.
The plastic ones do fine and handle a decent amount of flow.
To me the important thing is the media you fill it with and the larger you go the more expensive it becomes.
I can source plastic but not stainless and can source all types of media too. If you go stainless, go Momotaro

Hi Gazkoi, I'm interested in why you recommend Momotaro, especially as the media is the important thing - don't you think the other (cheaper) stainless ones on the market are any good?

ive got a momotaro 4 tier with 70kg of genuine BHM in,and will be adding another 20kg this year and its heavy its heavy, honestly i dont think the plastic ones could cope,i would be worried of the welds splitting, with stainless i have no concerns of that happening, cost me a fair bit for mine but worth it,,,,andi

Hi deejsysmi,
Andikoi beat me to most of the answer regarding weight and build quality.
Momotaro (to my understanding) was the first breeder in Japan to use and design these, which resulted in a lot of Japanese matting bring thrown our and they are still used today.
As for the media, the BHM is far more robust than replicas (such as CSM) and more porous enabling more bacteria to colonise. I have BHM and some CSM and when broken in half the ease of doing so, and porous difference is noticeable.
Above said, I do have plastic showers on my smaller vats and pond as I don’t need the scale of the Momotaro ones as I do on my main pond.
To experiment a little, I have one vat with CSM dimly do by the end of a couple of seasons will have a better idea of its performance. Whilst I do think it works, just not as good (potentially) as the BHM.
When something works and sells well, cheaper imitations soon follow.
Hope that helps.
Gaz

Those are my showers. The stainless has around 80kg of BHM each, larger plastic 30kg and smaller 20kg.
Smaller one not yet operational, however the larger plastic one is 85% of my EA vario pump.
Stainless handling 10,000 lph easily and would do more if I could pull more water through my sieve and drum chamber.
I stock the plastic ones and media, however if budget not an issue I would go stainless and BHM.
All the previous said, my Koi Wholesaler uses plastic crate showers with pumice and sponge and he swears by them, so opinion and experience will always vary.

I have a 3 tier JBR Plastics Bakki shower on my pond, its only been in a year and filled with 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media, I prefer the plastic to look at but the construction would lead me towards Stainless next time as joints are my biggest concern, I've had a few problems with plastic weld joints whilst doing my pond, even on my BIO tank the pipe spigots have started to show signs of the joints failing, but with a Stainless one you will never have that problem, also if its out in the sun all day that could also lead to problems, another options would be to look at Fibreglass, when they did my pond Fibreglassing they offered to make me a fibreglass Bakki shower, but I had already placed the order so went with the plastic one
4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick glass
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
2 x 18,000 lh pumps
Heated from house boiler through a heat exchanger
