    Filtration Upgrades

    Hi,

    I have a 3 chamber filter...pump fed.

Water goes though a uv light then into chamber 1 through a bar that spreads the flow.

Chamber 1 has brushes and water flows out over a weir into next chambers (matting).

There is a waste outlet at the bottom of chamber one.

Frankly...Its a bit of a bugger to clean. So thinking of some upgrades:

Upgrade 1) I was thinking of adding a pre filter sieve.

But i am a tinkering kind and so after some thinking...I was wondering what would happen if i took the brushes out of chamber 1 and just put a snug fitting mesh screen right down the middle, vertically, of this now empty chamber?

Water would have to go through the mesh to get to the weir.

It would be a pretty big mesh area say 60 x 80cm....I assume even with some clogging leading upto a wash, flow would be good.

    Any down sides?

Upgrade 2) i'd like to replace the japanese matting in chamber 2 and 3 with k1...with airstones under (for cleaning chamber 2 and for fluidizing chamber 3)....are there standard ways of keeping these out of places they shouldnt flow e.g. waste pipes, pond outlet...do cages or bags work without clogging or disrupting the effectiveness? Can you just cover outlets/separate chambers with high micron mesh?

Any input welcome...especially if i am just speaking nonsense

    Regards

    K

I’ve used cages before, never had a problem just make sure you get the biggest slots or holes you can, it’s an easy conversion and worth the effort

Hi K, it would work but I think it would clog up pretty fast so you may need two mesh so as to alternate them.

You could make a frame of 25mm angle plastic for the mesh and cheap to buy.
Could you not do something like a vortex first for settlement,I have one home made on my grow on,it is a 120ltr plastic drum with a 4ins inlet about 1/2 way down and a 90deg on the inside pointing horizontal to make the swirl.
Outlet near the top to next chamber,I have a drain on the bottom so when dirty all I do is open the drain and goes to waste.

I made a seive filter after the vortex and to be honest not a lot of poo gets there,it is mainly fines in the seive.

I am a big fan of the vortex and if set up right is very easy to maintain.

Maybe you're not being imaginative enough, if the following filter system is anything to go by - it's one of the most madcap setups I've ever seen (with no disrespect at all to the guy, I can't help smiling and thinking he's probably single, as almost no wife would tolerate that on their patio!):

I used to have a kk multibay pump fed, I put a sieve on top of the vortex and some jap matting in the vortex, made the second bay a static k1 and third bay moving k1, worked a treat for me.
