No need to turn it off, and it's got to help being a sterilisation unit, just personal preference

My pond has polycarbon roof permanently with uv diffuser in the roof so I probably don't need one but it gives me a little peice of mind, also my mindset is the less you turn things on and off the less chance of wear and tear or failure, the uv I have on it has been on constantly for about 9 years now and only goes off for bulb changes

Yep just leave mine on and change the bulb around May time annually so it’s at full power for summer. Really just personal choice, I think my pond would remain clear without on during winter...but I always change the bulb each year, and happy to ‘run it out’ over the winter months..

I did not find out the cause of the behaviour no.
The fish did die though, all surviving fish seem fine now fingers crossed Green water uv. I’ll likely be in for some fun once the weather warms up. Hoping to get the drum and shower in before then.

    charco123,

Your UV does more than just stop green water, it helps to eradicate many of the nasties that you cannot see. Leave it on all year. I have got two, one in my RDF and one before the water goes back into the pond from a sump. My water never goes green.

Just been reading that even though UVs are sterilising units doesn’t mean that it would take any effect on irradiating nasties or parasites .... and then I read another site that says it does kill parasites... seems a gray area ? Il run all year from now on I rekon but don’t think it hurts to turn off in winter either.

Like I said personal preference bud I don't see the point in turning off for what it costs to run, but that's just my opinion
