Charles hope your well . Ask this mate. Why is your water looking green.
I had that problem years ago. Because I turned it off mate. For a few months in winter.
And as said costs little to run. That's what made me keep it on all year around. Never had green water since.
Also once a year. I dose with aqua sause
    Blanket weed. A half dose.
    Also because of the drum.

Yep bit conflicting info. Sterilising units tend to be higher power, possibly stainless steel bodies to intensify light further, slower flow rates, and operating on slightly different wavelengths. Standard uv’s are targeting clumping of algae to cure green water. Maybe if you run them slow enough could kill nasties, but not designed for that and too slow will not keep up with the reproducing algae rates in the pond in summer. Cheers

Yeah all good fred mate, just ploughing through work and just finished the new kitchen so all go go go! Back on to topic... yeah Iv noticed in the last few days the water going slightly green (all down to the longer days and sunshine).... but asking when people turn them back on as gone more towards leaving them on all year round. After abit of research looks abit of a grey area but il opt for all year round I think. But from what Iv been reading I don’t fink it matters if it’s off in winter! My opinion from my research. Anyway hope your all good mate!

My reasons are that when you turn it off. There is still algi particles in your water more then likely. So when covers go on it's still working away in there mate. And accumulating and building up. Plus a lot of people go border line UV. In other words 2000gallon pond. UV to do 2000gallons.
So to me its border line.
My rule of thumb is double everything you buy for a koi pond. Filters air pumps. And UV a

I have seen algi in our lasses hot tub.
In the summer house. No sunlight in the hot tub. Now gets a good scrub with bleach before topping it up.
Your doing right turning it on mate.
I like that your researching things mate.

Mine has been on all year, replaced build last week as I noticed I was getting a bloom! Thought that was early.. this is my first winter with the pond so it’s all new to me.. I am covered but with clear polycarbonate so not sure if that helps or makes it worse..

Had mine off for about 3 months, can’t see anything untoward. I’ll pop it back on soon as the mornings start getting brighter.

Had mine off for the winter as well and just turned it back on last week as water was just starting to show some signs of going green and cloudy.

Water has gone pea green, turned the UV on last week, gave it a few days to catch up, still no improvement, fuse had flown in a big way and found the plastic box with the ballast in was full of water. Handy!

From what I read in a sterilizer the water sits for longer in front of the UV i.e. it flows slowly or the UV is stronger so has more effect on whatever is in the water. I don't take many chances and leave both of mine on all year. One in the RDF and one in the return to the pond, doesn't cost a lot, When you think of the speed of the water in a 40mm pipe (through the UV) it must pass by quite quickly.
