RO and GH dosing
Do any koi keepers here using 100% RO water for top ups and water changes, dose to keep GH up?
or just add a percentage of filtered non RO water?
what are your dGH levels?
my own pond has been running on 100% RO very happily since i set it up.
but over time as the KH slowly dropped down to level i was happy with (4 dKH) so i simply dosed sodium bicarbonate to hold it at that level.
GH has slowly dropped too, but at a much slower pace due to constant water changes and trickle in/out.
at what point would you dose to maintain dGH or would you just let it fall to zero?
my concern is how it might effect the levels of sumi vs beni colouration,
beni should benefit, but sumi might suffer at very low or zero dGH.
also reading various Koi articles on the web postulate that zero dGH would adversly effect osmoregulation making it harder for koi to maintain the ion levels in their bodies.
what are your thoughts on this?

I don't think many people run RO so not many will have an opinion. I watched a rasta koi vid on YouTube the other day where they covered the subject. They said it helped with growth, etc, but Seems OTT to me. I like big koi, but not bothered if they're record breaking.
General consensus from various things I've seen is that, a Japanese koi going in hard water will bring out more Sumi if its there under the scales, so that seems to go along with what you're saying. But not seen anything that suggests that you would loose what sumi is already there if you're in softer water. Hopefully someone else will know more on the subject.Last edited by Alburglar; 24-01-2020 at 01:24 AM.

Thanks for the reply Alburglar.
It's not really for max growth I'm using RO.
I kind of fell into using it as the 20" 3 pod I bought still let loads of chlorine through.
So i dragged my old RO unit that I had for my reef tank out.
As a quick fix.
My water is very hard gh around 16 with kh 11
And noticed the clarity if the water improved a lot and the fish seemed to be much more active so I stuck with it.
I was curious what gh those that do run RO have.
Mine is virtually zero atm.
