    Moving bed build advice.

Hi, I am going to try to build a moving bed for my 2400 g pond. I was thinking of using a water butt is this ok to use and what size butt should I use?

    Any advice greatly appreciated

    Thanks

    Peter

Hi Jazz, presume when you say a moving bed you mean something like k1 with air?

Water buts are fine and cheap for about £20,would go for the larger size and Wicks etc do them.
I made my own and have the inlet near the top and outlet near the bottom.

Spring bank koi does a video on YouTube making a moving bed. Also make sure the water butt has two flat large surfaces for you to attach your tank fittings

my setup with water butts are easy pod which is mechanical filter with k1. the 2x 100ltr water butts. there not k1. its grog jap matt and wool. and its for a 500 gallon grow on
    not my main pond
that would be to small for a pond. you need larger volume on your k1 moving bed in my opinion. something that can hold at least 200lt k1 minimum. so say a 400ltr IBC or barrel

Hi Jazz, If useing a water but go for the largest, you can buy blue barrel 45 gal plastic drums cheap and they are strong as long as they are food safe and not had any nasties in.
Another option is a small ibc tank think they are about 100 odd gals depends how much room you have.

I made mine from a sheet of ply then fiberglass it but it was a lot of work but I will see if I can find some photos for you.
My pond is 3000 gals so similar to yours and I have about 150 ltrs of k1 but also have a shower after a drum.

Looking to build mine this week. I see you have the inlet at the top and outlet at the bottom with the mesh but what is the third pipe with a 90? Thanks

This could be a option for you if you wanted something shorter in height, you can get lids for them too Moving bed build advice.IMG_0061.JPG

I have a 120 litre barrel but just trying to work it out and make sure. In my head it is a simple one pipe in and one out with air but I was wondering about an overflow

I went for something similar to that tank I just sent you, I have one inlet hi up and an outlet on the opposite side slightly lower... I haven’t yet but do have all the bits to add a waste outlet with a ball valve, Just for maintenance and cleaning. (Even though moving beds are kind of self cleaning, thought I’d put one on as all ones you can buy have waste outlets on and I think moving beds still need to be cleaned but very very rarely, but I’m not 100% sure.

I empty my nexus yearly. All the media.300lts To have a look in the bottom for crap settlement. Last 2 years nothing.

It's getting your air right. When I ran just of the nexus ring with air. I got crap in the bottom. So I added air manifold and 6 air stones in the bottom. Now no crap.
    That was last week

Was going to be a 1.5 inch ball valve right at the bottom. I have a pondovac so thinking if it needs it I can isolate and quickly hoover rather than empty as the media will float

I am using an air stone the same width as the bottom of the barrel so assume this will give good agitation

When I get it up and running I was thinking of using a strong PP treatment for 24 hours as this is supposed to help. After I was thinking of emptying the tank and then adding filter starter, closing the in and out valves and have the filter with air running for a while. Would this boost the bacteria growth?

170g/day per 25l of Hel-x. I have 50l of Hel-x that can be increased if neededl. It's sat in a bio with 185l of water. So the question is how much do you feed your fish?

Also Bio - ammonia > nitrite > nitrate is an oxidisation and there are more aerobic bacteria strains than anaerobic. They also love carbon dioxide as a source of carbon for building their bodies according to the research papers I've been reading. So enough oxygenated water the better.

The reasons for soaking the K1 in PP, is to remove any moulding release agent that is used in the manufacture. The PP also roughens the surface of the K1 which apparently makes a better surface for the Bio to adhere to, it also makes the K1 sink, ie when you put new untreated K1 into water it piles up onto the surface, once you have done the PP, it then sinks, which is what is needed to make a moving bed.

Remember to wash all the PP off the K1 before adding to the filter.

Personally, I would not try and mature a filter separated from the pond. You really need the whole system to mature naturally, by buying a few fish, feed lightly, and letting nature take its course. There is no quick way to mature a filter, and it can take almost a year to properly mature, depending on the system set up.

There is of course 'fishless' cycling, which is feeding the K1 in a container with ammonia, but I am not an advocate of it, ie sooner or later you have to connect it to the pond and if its a new set up there won't be the amount of fish to sustain the bio, unless of course you can afford to buy all the fish in one go Lol.

It is goi g onto an existing pond which is established so I will just PP and then run as normal. Thanks
