Thread: A new addition

    A new addition

Got a clarity protein skimmer on the cheap so was rude not to add it on to my system. Itís set to recirculate off the bio chamber.
Runs off an aqua eco vario 20000, currently set at 60% for 73w which is pretty decent I thought. Cheap pump too from coastal koi.

Some of these filtration systems look like space tech compared to my simple old gravity shower system!

Itís a container for a prototype media Iím testing.
Blocks of pure ceramic I had made in Europe (no nasty Chinese junk) with a massive surface area, around twice as much as BHM.
Itís only been running a few months. Once itís been running a year then Iíll take a view whether or not to let it loose on the general public lol.
In all honesty though, how I measure if itís working or not is unclear as itís working in conjunction with other filtration. I might turn it off in the height of summer and see what happens to the levels etc. Then turn it back on then measure again. The first things needed though are to establish the good bacteria and ensure it doesnít fall to pieces like another infamous ceramic media did.

Love that gary. What's it called and how does it work.
I thought it was a chimney when first seen it.
Is it some kind of tower shower. And what size pump is on it mate

Itís basically a big trickle tower full of plastic media like K1 but bigger.
The water cascades over it and makes lots of air bubbles, the proteins in the water which give foam on a pond surface stick to the air bubbles and get left behind to dribble out of a separate outlet.
You can make one out of 6Ē underground drainage easily enough but Iím a bit time poor at the moment. Also, 6Ē stuff is quite expensive although you could probably make one in 4Ē it may have to be a bit taller. Thereís loads online about Diy versions.

This one came up at a bargain price as it was probably a second/returned item so 10 minutes with some sealant and it was back to new.
You need about 10k litres going over it so not massive flow. Iíve got a 20k vario pump from Coastal Koi on it, lifting about 2.25m head and it seems to working a treat and very low watts.
Quite impressed with it for the money.
2Ē inlet and outlet as well so dead easy to plumb in and it came with the solvent weld pipe connectors as well so a bit of a bargain pump at first glance.
Foam really irritates me so fingers crossed this will do the job, had some in there this morning so it definitely works.
I saw one on Regís pond and his water is crystal clear.
Iím not touching anything now apart from making a splash guard lol.
Cant say the Mrs was too impressed about having it on the side of the pond so got my thinking cap on and with a few ideas bounced around with Reg and Frim, a bit of reconfiguration of plumbing it all went in a treat.

Just had a look on line lol. Looks like a very good addition. I was thinking of putting a bakki shower. On my top pond. But I think there a bit of an eye sore. I like that idea for inside my filter house. If it ain't to high the tower. And run it into my ultra sieve from the top. Instead of flowing into ultra sieve. Blank that off with rubber boots.
Can you get them gravity feed or are they pump fed only

Seen a few DIY ones and seem easy to do like just one of the many ideas to toy with once I get pond running properly I might be asking a few questions on it haha. To much I don't understand about filtration at the moment these and ozones still need to get the gear for anoxic to help get my head around that
