    Stand Alone Drum Filter VS Drum Bio Combi

    Hi,
    Just like to know if anyone has put a stand alone drum in front of separate bio unit whether that be a custom built unit or existing multi bay.
    What issues if any did you come across?

    Assuming the bio section in both set ups were adequate what are the main issues, the ones that I am considering at the moment are;

    A separate 2 unit system requires additional pipes & valves to link the 2 together.Additional cost plus time to set up, but I have the bio unit already ( my multi bay)

    There may be an issue getting water levels in both units equal. This then causes the drum to operate more frequently.

    The whole system is not as neat as a combi unit.

    Assuming I'm happy to pay the extra cost for the combi are there any disadvantages? (bio is not an issue)

    Regards

    I did exactly that. You have to get the drum level right with pond water level and work away from that.Absolutely no issues doing that .I had 3 bio sections so theoretically could have used 3 different media..I also valved all diffusers so i could alter air flow to any or all of them..Combis are more compact.Ive bought a Profi combi 15and still get 100L of k1 in

    Regard levels, if you have a “fall” over your skimmer then the “max” water level of the drum will be this not the water level of the pond.
    In your bio chamber you have to all for the water falling in the dirty side of the drum and also any drawdown from pumps.
    For example, my 2x20k pumps on full blast will drawdown around 50mm in my bio chamber which is around 1200x800x600 with 2 x 4” feeds from the drum. I don’t have too much head loss.
    What I’m saying is, if you have you drum and bio chamber “level” you could lose 100mm of volume in your bio chamber.
    The top of your chamber has to be higher than the top of the drum waste chute though else it will overflow.
    If that doesn’t make sense I’ll sketch it out tomorrow.
    Bio chambers give better bang for your buck but agree, they’re not as near and tidy.
    If you have 2 outlets in your drum you could use one for bio chamber and the other can feed a shower directly.
    That’s quite a flexible solution.
