Help needed do I put on a Bakki shower

I'm at my wits end. I have a big pond (approx 90,900 liters approx 20,000 gallons, yes I did put gallons) that had been left with little maintenance for some time. The fish were doing fine but the water was sludgy at the bottom and not very clear. The home made and very large filter system was starting to leak constantly so I decided to fit something new and easier to maintain.

I was looking at a combination of nexus and K1 filters but was instead sold 2 x Oase biotech 140000 (I had explained that I had an injury to my neck and shoulders but was told these were self cleaning. With this pond they weren't, they needed cleaning every day including the filters. I was badly missold these and very dissappointed that the company would put profit over the customer.)

Long story short, the fish started to die and I just couldn't keep up with cleaning these. I did a full pond clean, keeping a third of the water and putting it back with pond bombs, filtered water etc. The filters were now easier to look after but the fish continued to die.

By this time I knew I needed to go back to my original plan and had been talking to another koi place and so I went for:
    BD-700Drum Filter
Extra large bio with 400 liters of K1
    80w submersible UV

This was another nightmare. One of the pipes was not connnected and I woke up to find the pond empty and the fish flapping in the bottom. Over the next 2 days I lost 18 koi from 14 to 24+ inches and 2 sturgeon, both of about 16 inches. I've been promised they will replace them.

I had asked for a bakki shower to be fitted for the pond return, it hasn't been and I need to decide if to bother.

This place have been a nightmare. Hopefully they will honor their promise to replace the koi and sturgeon but I was told the installation would be finished 18th or 19th November. Still nothing. They keep promising they will come and then nothing. I'm still looking at a big beige box sat on a timber frame with big nails poking out. Everytime they come they give me another excuse as to why they can't fit the bakki shower. The latest one is I want to put too many returns into it?? I have to admit I have no idea. I expected them to tell me what will work best but they won't answer the phone and email reply is about once a week and usually only if I post something on their facebook page.

Does anyone have an opinion if a bakki shower is worth fitting at this point?

First picture is the pond after the pipe incident. I had got some water back in by the time I took it.

    Wow, that’s some pond.
    Gravity or pumped system?
And, where are located (roughly will do)
Someone might be able to pop over and have a look.

Stunning pond like truly a proper pond. Is that a water fall feature the the right on pic 1. If so Maybe a anoxic filter set up would work great maybe Bcc or rs could advise more?

    Thanks.
There is a waterfall on the left now that is fed from the skimmer. The new filter just has 3 4 inch pipes going into the pond. I was reading on one of the other threads about the anoxic filter but hadn't heard of one before. I wil do a bit of research.

    Thanks Anne,

I know. I guess it was naive but I thought I knew what I was doing and these are two established places that have let me down.

It was sick about losing the fish though.

If you want information on anoxic filtration may I suggest that the article on my website will give you what you need:

    Thanks Manky

I've read through those and will be adding this over winter. I have to work out how big it will need to be. There are a lot less fish than therte were but there are probably 35 + fish in the pond.

I say yes to the shower as this is the single most effecient way to house the good bacteria,if you're gonna be using plastic media in your other filters I would use Feather rock in the shower, some use Lava rock but the feather rock is much more pourous and a lighter product. It usually comes in larger sizes but I use my wet tile saw and cut it up into about 3/4"x 1 1/2 inches and you get tons of surface area..

    Thanks,

They are coming out on 23rd Dec to finish the housing around the filters. I will decide then weather to go for a 2 meter shower or make my own anoxic filter. Looking at the blogs, thanks to Manky for those, I should be able to do it. It just depends on space.

Hi Caroline, these are only my personal thoughts, others may think differently. I’m not being rude, just trying to understand your thought process.

    1. I doubt whether your pond bottom will ever be clear as your pumps just won’t pull enough water over that area.
    2. What are you hoping to achieve with a shower?
    3. Have you performed any water quality tests?
    4. Have you changed or do you regularly change any water?
    5. You mentioned to me about ultimately stocking 50 fish. Presumably mainly Koi? If so, are you ok with regularly feeding that amount of fish and are you aware of the amount of waste that this is likely to produce?
    6. When you originally filled pond did you dechlorinate the additional water?
(May explain your fish deaths perhaps?)

Imo, you’re under filtered and under pumped for the size of pond and the level of stocking you want to end up with.
Even a large volume pond will require some kind of water change even if an anoxic filter might mitigate that somewhat. I’m not convinced of that myself and I actually have one.
Any new pond and filter will have to go through the nitrogen cycle, al explained quite clearly on Manke’s site.

Let’s help you get to where you want to be.

    Regards

    Gary

As an addition, I don’t believe a shower is necessary the most efficient method of providing biological filtration, certainly not from either a cost (if using say BHM) or an energy point of view as you have to pump lots of water over them to achieve what they’re supposed to do.
I don’t think there’s any doubt they work, “efficient” they’re not.
You can add one reasonably cost effectively by using an alternative media but it’ll still take shedloads of water over it to work correctly.
    Again, all imho

I was toying with the idea of shower or anoxic for the new year and after loads of posts on here I'll be going anoxic just seems to deal with the water a load better

If you have the room then it’s worth a go.
At the end of the day, if it doesn’t work out for some reason the. You could convert to a moving bed or veggie type filter.
I’m still in early stages with mine, it’s now cold with no feeding but zero ammonia for quite some time now and no nitrite. Nitrate at 20.
I am also under stocked so the proof of the pudding will be when the weather warms up and some more fish go in.
    I’m comfortable so far.
