Ok Gary and Fred you're both on the list.
All instructors at K.O.I. run our courses by email because it helps us be more organised than trying to keep track of messages scattered across forums and Facebook so, if you PM me your email, I'll let you know more about the course when it's ready.
If anyone else is interested, PM me your email and I'll let you know the course details when it's ready.

Don't let that put you off if you really want to do the course Fred. The last guy who was dyslexic passed quite easily.
Spelling and grammar aren't taken into account in the exams on K.O.I. courses and we don't expect long detailed answers. Students just have to show their instructor that they understand what is being asked in the question. They can do that with a long detailed answer if they wish but they can also give short sentences or even bullet points of the relevant pieces of information.
The purpose of the courses is to pass on information and we try very hard not to fail anyone so answers are marked on a pass or try again basis. If a student misses any relevant point in an answer, or even if they completely bugger it up, we wont give them the answer but we tell them what they missed and give some guidance as to what section of the module they should read again.
A few students get a pass on every question on the first attempt, but most need a second or even a third attempt on some of the questions while the instructor gives guidance as to what points they need to include until we've teased out of them everything they need to know.
E.g.
Fake question 1: How would you make a biocenosis basket?
A. Put some cat litter and laterite in a planting basket.
Instructor: I need a little more. Can you just pour them both in? (See the diagram of the basket in Section X of the module).
A. No the laterite goes in the centre.
Instructor:What can you do if laterite isn't available?
A. You can substitute Ironite 101 or Aquabasis Plus.
Instructor:Will any cat litter do?
A. The cat litter must retain it's granular structure underwater and not become soft or mushy. If unsure you can test a prospective litter by putting some in a glass of water overnight and making sure that it hasn't become soft in the morning.
Instructor:Well done, you got there. You've passed.
These aren't Micky Mouse courses with an easy exam. Students have to learn some clever stuff or at least know where in the module detailed information can be found so there will be other questions which will require students to give more in-depth or technical information. However, this general process applies in each case where an answer doesn't contain the correct information.

I ain't dyslexic syd. I was just having a bit of banter.
I used to do 18 courses a year on the oil rigs syd. Every 2 years a refresher. With exams. And did that for 40 years and vowed I would nt do another course or exam.
So sorry mate. I have to decline. Thanks for the offer though.
I just point people to your site.
Thanks fred

No problem Fred, at least it gave me the opportunity to let others know how much effort we put in for students who need help to ensure they leave the courses with a thorough understanding of that subject whether it be our most basic Level 1 course on Basic Koi Keeping right up to our extremely deep Level 6 courses.

And as a further example of how hard I try to help students. Most are British, American or Canadian but K.O.I. is an international organisation so I also get a few from other countries and whose first language isn't English (British or US).
So I've spent much of the afternoon trying to give easily understandable answers to another two pages of deep chemistry questions which are way outside the remit of my Level 2 Water Quality course. As if that isn't enough, the questions have been Google translated from Hebrew into English then put into Dropbox because they are too long for an email and I have to be careful about my phraseology because my answers have to make sense when they are translated back to Hebrew.
I'm not boasting nor am I complaining, I wouldn't do it if I didn't want to, but anyone who feels uncertain that they have the language skills to answer the questions should know what effort we instructors put into helping people to understand the subjects we teach.

Hey all.
If I can throw a tip into the pool of wisdom based on my 6 years of Anoxic heaven, it would be absolutely DO NOT plant up anoxic biocinosis baskets. Lillies go wild, their root "stump" manages to track from the original basket to the next closest one whereupon it then sets about destroying that basket. I now keep all my Iris' etc in their own baskets with nothing more than a couple of rocks to hold them in place. The roots that escape are regularly cut back to the outer faces of their baskets and where possible the plants are mechanically supported in the anoxic chamber with a big enough gap to prevent them finding their way into the biocinosis baskets.
I've even resorted to putting some of the bigger plants (in their empty baskets) into submerged containers like a washing bowl, storage boxes etc.
Lillies have destroyed at least 4 or 5 of my baskets but I still have a huge amount in reserve.
As for water changes and rain, haven't changed the water (for fresh) other than the occasional drain-down of the anoxic chamber (although I haven't even cleaned that out this year!) It rains, the pond level rises and I manually siphon it back to the working level as required, usually forced by the dog needing to take a wee at 05:00 in the morning.
Cheers - PeteThe place that pays the bills.

I'm not sure if that's the right litter.
Needs to be clay I think but the ingredients on that pack don't say clay.
Sanicat classic in the yellow bag is the right stuff for sure, I bought mine online at £8.99 per 30kg bag and £25 delivery..... Had 8 bags delivered so even with postage it was cheaper than buying from a shop.
1 bag did around 1.5 baskets. It's a lot of work cleaning it and sieving out the dust and about 1/3 or even half of mine went to waste.

I don’t think it’s the right type of cat litter either, what R’s says.
It needs to be non clumping “clay” (fullers earth type)
It’s all in Manke’s Site

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
