Read through Manky’s thread
There is so much info on how it works but what I cannot fully understand is how to build the basket.
Taken from mankys site
Take a planting basket, fill it with cat litter, then scoop out a depression from the centre and fill that depression with about 400 grams of an aquarium plant fertiliser called laterite.
What is not clear is how the add the iron source.. I assume that the litter is not just going to stay in situ and allow me to just scoop some out... do you then cover with litter?
It may all be obvious to some, so sorry for the newbie question.
It would be great to see a tutorial on this.. does it exist?
Thanks
Mike

Think of planting seeds. Or something like that.
It goes right in the middle of the cat litter.
With gravel on the top. And I think nylon tights. To keep it all in.
That's how I am going to do it in the spring
I might be talking out my arse. But that's how I have read it.
Oh forgot. A really good wash for the cat litter.

I'm not sure what is behind your question Mike.
The Laterite, (or either of the substitutes), is the source of all the nutrients that the bugs and the plant will need so, you just fill a basket then scoop out a depression and add the laterite.
The diagram in the article shows how a finished basket should look. I've been promoting anoxic filtration since 2009 in magazine articles and club talks or PowerPoint presentations and no one has ever reported that they've had any difficulty scooping out the cat litter and adding the laterite.
A few people have had ideas to make it a little easier including putting the laterite in a bag made from cut down stockings/tights as is shown in the article. Another idea was to put a length of pipe in the basket before adding the laterite then filling the pipe and removing it. But, whether you scoop out a depression or use any other method, as long as the laterite is somewhere near the centre, that's good enough.Last edited by Manky Sanke; 15-12-2019 at 12:42 PM.

Anoxic Filtration - So Shocked I Nearly Burnt my Dinner
Hi Manky,
The only thought behind my question was that it was not clear to me how to make the basket. Your responses seem a little passive aggressive/ defensive. I am just looking for guidance
I have not personally got up close and personal with cat litter before but assume it would be like a fine grade aggregate similar to a rock salt and the iron source is more like granular. My thinking was if I tried to make a depression in it it would likely just slide back in.. I’m likely massively over thinking it. But I was not sure if the iron source core will hold in a ball shape or if it’s like a dry powder it is also not clear if this would then be covered with littler before topping with a heavier aggregate
I like to get things right.
So I assume the construction method would be.
Fill the basket around half full of suitable litter
Add the iron rich substance (Aquabasis) core to the centre of the basket. (Around 400g if using 30x30cm basket).
Top up the basket to near full with litter
Add a final topping layer of heavy aggregate (to ensure the litter is not disturbed by flow)
When I do construct the baskets I will take some photos or maybe a video tutorial to help us over thinkers...
Thanks again for all of the effort you have put in to promote this

You’re over thinking things.
Make an orange sized ball of Aquabasis (400 grammes) using a pair of tights.
Sit in slight depression in cat litter. It won’t all fall in if you’ve just rinsed it.
Cover over
Job done

Mike,
I never argue with anyone on forums or FaceBook but I have to say I’m somewhat surprised that you describe my last post as passive aggressive or defensive because I said that no one has ever reported a problem putting the laterite into a basket and gave you a couple of alternate ways in which it can be done.
You are definitely over thinking this. You can scoop out a depression which, when the litter is wet from being rinsed, is easier than you seem to believe. Alternatively, you could follow the advice I gave in my last post.
“A few people have had ideas to make it a little easier including putting the laterite in a bag made from cut down stockings/tights as is shown in the article. Sorry if I offended you at all was not my intention.

I'm not offended Mike and I retired early for the specific reason that I wanted to pass on what I learnt from my decades of playing with water for a living so I have all the time in the World to help people who want it.
Make yourself a test basket then you'll see that it isn't complicated and it will give you the confidence go ahead with the project but, if you have any problems, by all means ask.
As an afterthought, I teach on-line courses for Koi Organisation International which is an American teaching organisation. I've just finished writing my second advanced course for them and the next course I have to prepare is a short, simple course on Anoxic Filtration.
These courses take months to write so it won't be until well into 2020 but I go over to America every two years to spend three days giving lectures and PowerPoint Presentations for K.O.I. and I'm hoping to have the Anoxic Filtration course ready to announce at the conference in June next year. That isn't a promise but, if you like, if I have it ready by then, I'll put you on the list of people who are interested in enrolling.
