Bead filter media replacement
Hi all,
I have a bead filter system with my pond and i think i need to replace the media as I'm finding that some of the media is coming out when i'm running the backwash programme and cleaning it out. I inherited the pond when we moved in a year ago and i'm still learning loads about looking after the fish and the pond. In all honesty i don't really have a clue about maintenance of the pumps, filters etc so any help would be appreciated. I guess the first question I have is where do I purchase the replacement media, it currently has very small white plastic beads in it? The second question is going to be how do i replace them?
Many thanks,
Chris

If you have a bead filter pumping out beads when you back wash then maybe you have a cracked or broken pipe inside.
You could use k1 as another type of media5000 Gallon Fibreglassed Pond With 54" x 27" Infinity Window

Thanks Andy is it just a case of clearing out the current media and filling the filter with the new stuff? Do i need to fill it to the top or should it be half full?
many thanks,
Chris

They do a micro K1 which a lot of people are changing over to, its not cheap though it cost me £190 to change mine over , not sure what size or make yours is so cant really advise , I just used a kitchen sieve to get my old beads out .

Having just looked on-line I think I've got an Elecro Powerbead system which i think can be found here:

Not sure if this can take the K1 media?

Hi Chris,
in the manual you linked to, you'll see that the PB85 has 13kg of media. Most bead filters use the same size beads so replacements are easy to get.

I have the same filter, and the only way beads can escape the bottomis is if the level gets too low. Disconnect the pipes in and out, then undo the collar and remove the valve and connected pipe assembly. You can then examine the condition of the beads and stir with a stick to ensure they're not compacted. It's hard to do this without spilling a few beads. Connect everything back up, run the agitation pump and backwash the filter before putting it back in service. If all looks good and no beads are lost after the next 2 or 3 backwashes, there may be no reason to replace them.

Hi all,
Just had a bit of a disaster. I was running my bead filter for the first time to check for leaks (bought second hand) and when I drained it down loads of beads came out the bottom. Did I drain it too low or is there something wrong with it?
Thanks,
Tim

I think it's a bbf 3 although an older model. It looks very simar to this one

Any ideas? I don't see it as a huge problem as long as I don't fully drain it down in the future.
I have been looking at where I can buy replacement beads but can't find them. Some people seem to suggest k1 micro media but does it float? If not then how can it work in a bead filter?
Thanks and sorry for the noob questions.

Thank you. Would you recommend putting it into my bubble bead filter?

Hi
the older bead that used to be used didn’t float the “newer “ beads float which I think made the a lot more efficient as it was easier to pump.
my last bead filter I had was about 2/3s full.
i don’t run a bead filter any more but micro K1 seems to be popular in them.

Thanks Sim
I think I will buy some micro k1 and add it to the bead filter.

Post back on here when you have done it.
It will be interesting to see how it compares, when I had a nexus the difference in what the standard k1 caught and the micro was quite surprising.
Micro k1 I would think would have more flow but often wondered if that meant letting a few fines though, be good to know.

The top will come off, some have the valve on the top others like mine had the multi valve on the side.
there was a clear cover on the top that would come off to take beads out etc.
also normally a blead valve to let air out.
The one with the valve on top you remove the hole valve there’s normally a clamp with a couple of bolts though.
