Happy new year!
Even though we're out of the main koi season from a customer perspective, we're still busy growing on the koi produced last year and preparing for 2023 spawnings. Our tanks are getting towards their most populated state, and that means our husbandry workload is towards the upper end in the annual cycle.
There are 9 new blog posts on our koi blog since I last posted here, including:
Several more in our 'week in the life of a koi farmer' series:

Seasonal messages:

And some previews on what's coming through for 2023 spring tosai harvests:

Plus, a couple of stand alone blogs:

As always, please enjoy and if you have any questions... I'm available here to answer them :-)

Hi , just back from Japan The trip was a huge success - I acquired a range of new koi to double our breeding stock numbers and also expand the number of varieties we breed, and also built connections with some of the leading breeders in Niigata. You'd expect a few blog posts on it... and here they are:
trip overview:

new varieties we are hoping to breed:

stand out ponds from 5 top breeders in Niigata, showing the culmination of those breeders' work:

Thank you John. We have our first employee starting in 2 weeks time which is going to help. It's a big roll of the dice this year; and we're all excited about it here too.
It's full circle with our customers - they had their say in the questionnaire - and we listened and have bought brood stock in many of the varieties they've asked us to breed. All we have to do now, is the really hard bit - and actually breed them and produce Nishikigoi !Co-founder and owner of Adam Byer Koi Farm (https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/koi-for-sale)

We have a new 'Koi Keeping Guide' section on the website where I'll be sharing advice and guidance, and answering important questions in the koi keeping world.
My first thought piece is to answer a question I was asked on my recent trip to Japan, which was "Are koi breeders artists or farmers"
Here's my response: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/...sts-or-farmers
This is the first of several thought pieces with more to follow, drawing on my experiences and inspiration from my recent trip to Niigata, Japan.
Further questions I will be tackling, include: Does the beauty of a koi depend on how good an example an individual koi is.

Exciting news: we've reached a major milestone in our growth and have hired our first ever employee! As a family-run business, this is a huge accomplishment for us and we're thrilled to welcome Bradley Rubra as our Assistant Manager. Bradley brings a wealth of experience from his recent placement at a top UK koi dealer, and his passion for aquaculture and koi. We're excited to have him on board as we continue to grow our business. With the support of our loyal customers, we're well-positioned to produce even larger volumes of high-quality locally produced koi. Thank you for joining us on this journey and watch out for more updates!

I hope you've all had a good season this year.
Something new we've started, after being asked by customers so many times over the last couple of years... is to do more on YouTube. You asked, we listed.
So we have started two vlogs. The main one is a Q&A vlog, and we are aiming for a monthly episode. The ideal being , people can send in their questions through the month and we'll answer them in a vlog at the end of the month. Episode 1 of the Adam Byer Koi Farm Q&A vlog is now available - https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/...ng-koi-breeder
We are also recording more general farm vlogs when there's something big going on. There are a couple now, which related to koi released over the autumn period. These are probably a little out of date, but still a good watch and you can find them here:

We've started a koi varieties spotlight series which is basically where I do an in depth analysis of a variety and cover it's hallmark features and provide pointers on what to look for, including buying tips.
I've written two so far, and you can find them on our blog here:
Showa (15-20 minute read) : https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/...e-coloured-koi
Ki Utsuri (10 minute read) : https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/...-the-koi-world
I hope you enjoy them!Co-founder and owner of Adam Byer Koi Farm (https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/koi-for-sale)
