Thread: koi value

    koi value

Has anyone thought, when you see a Nisai/Tosai on sale for around £1000 does this seem a realistic price? and have you noticed, hardly anyone makes on koi when they sell them on! I recently posted something on facebook regarding buying a tv for a £1000 with a guarantee, yet when it comes to koi you walk out the door and cross your fingers, hoping it will out live at least a 12 month guarantee, I got shot down as I was told you cannot compare the two! as one is live stock

However, when you get up into these high price brackets shouldn't there be something put in place to protect the koi keeper? I'm sure many expensive koi have been bought and died within a very short time of purchase and for no blame on the koi keeper, sometimes koi just go wrong on the inside and its out of our control to help them survive.

If you had a £1000 TV and immersed it in water after a week of buying it, i'm pretty sure your guarantee would be void,

There are so many factors that can kill the koi you've just purchased which is out of the hands of the shop you've just purchased it from.

I remember a guy who specialised in breeding rare pheasants and always said that if you keep livestock you'll always have deadstock

This is a difficult one, from the viewpoint ot the purchaser yes there should be a guarantee but from the viewpoint of the seller I wouldn't guarantee a fish sale because the chances are the buyer will be at fault if the fish dies.
Personally I can see why there is little resale value in a koi because all the expense and risk is incurred by the importer from there on in the fish normally becomes a risk to the rest of the fish in a pond......doesn't it?

I'm sure a dealer could choose to offer some kind of guarantee if they wanted to. It would need to have some pretty stringent terms and conditions relating to how the purchaser has kept the fish, health status of other fish it's been in contact with, proof of water parameters including oxygen. Proof of safe stocking rates since purchase. Etc. etc.

The price of the fish would then have to go up to cover losses- so your £1000 fish could then cost £1250 or so, maybe more. Lots of disputes would ensue as buyers try to bin blame on the dealer when the fish succumbs to parasites that were already in their pond but are new to the new fish.

Since future health, growth and development are all unknown entities and to a large extent in the lap of the gods, guaranteeing that a fish would keep it's looks for example would be impossible without charging many times more for the fish to safeguard a living wage when inevitably some don't turn out as hoped. You need to remember that the average koi dealer in the UK is not making a fortune importing and selling koi. It's hard work and there are already significant uninsurable losses involved just like any livestock industry. If the mythical 'koi tax' was really a thing, they would all be rolling in it, rather than scratching a living just like the rest of us.
