    Orchard fisheries sturgeon food colour

    Hi All
Just opened up my bag of sturgeon food and was a bit surprised to find it a different colour to what I have used in the past.Pellets are a light brown colour, very much like a koi pellet not black can anyone confirm this. Cheers

I use their 4mm premium koi pellets which are a sandy brown colour so maybe they have sent you the wrong stuff by mistake. Best thing to do is ring or email them for a definite answer I would say.

Hi thank's. I have emailed them this morning asking them this question.
One thing I have noticed today after feeding with this food is how much waste the koi are visibly dropping. If it is the correct Sturgeon food could it be too rich for the koi
I havn't changed food amount .This is only 2nd day .How do your fish respond.
    Cheers

Similar I think but I have noticed that they aren't feeding like they were earlier in the year which I have put down to the temperature changes and I keep having to pull the pump out of the pond to remove the blanket weed from it up until a couple of weeks ago plus other adjustments which I think has spooked them a bit. They tend to eat quickly if I'm not standing near the pond at the moment so hopefully they will go back to normal soon. I have been finding what appears to be fish terds in the skimmer basket bit seeing as the skimmer was only installed a couple of months ago I don't know how much they were producing before as it was just ending up in the filter system.

Lovely subject to be talking about just before lunch I know

Maybe it was the same time they stopped selling the 6mm premium koi pellets too?

seem to recall there was a supplier issue and possibly at the time stockpiling etc was happening re leaving the EU, maybe they changed manufacturing unit ahead of the pending cross border issues, they always seem very good at replying so id expect them to be in contact

Hi,they did get back to me, saying that it is of a light brown colour . regarding the waste they advised that it may take up to 2 weeks for the fish to adjust . I hope so ... cause i have a 12KG bag.

I'm not personally familiar with this food, but one possible explanation for the change of colour might be if they stopped using spirulina and perhaps substituted paprika (a cheaper and much more widely available ingredient). Paprika is widely available in Europe, whereas much of the global supply of spirulina is produced in the far east (and some in Hawaii).

Spirulina is very intense dark green, whereas paprika is red. As a small percentage of a food recipe, that might create dark pellets (with spirulina) or light brown pellets (with paprika).

Both paprika and spirulina are commonly used to promote colour in koi, as both these ingredients are rich in carotenoids.

Only a logical guess, and there might be a different reason for the change you observed in your usual fish food.
