Sturgeon mainly eats floating food
Hi, my sturgeon mainly eats from the top of the pond, I feed both sinking and floating food regularly but he seems to prefer eating the floating food, is this normal. I have had him for about 6 years he is approx 1 metre long and very healthy

What type of sturgeon is it? Is it a diamond back by any chance? Apparently they will often feed from your hand and feed off the surface. Although my diamond back generally only comes up to the surface at night and definitely won't feed from my hand... not yet at least.
At a meter long that must be a hefty ol' sturgeon you have. Are you feeding enough of the sinking stuff for its body weight? Also is the sinking stuff you feed sturgeon specific?
As (I'm sure you already know) they need high (40%+) protein fishmeal pellets.
So if the sinking pellets you feed have a lower % of protein, or if the protein in them is plant based rather than fishmeal, that might explain why it's also taking pellets off the top so much - it's just hungry.
I get my sturgeon pellets from carpco.co.uk. I think, like nearly every other pellet, they're made by coppens. Orchard fisheries also do a dedicated sturgeon pellet too.

The koi aren't pinching the Sturgeons food are they, the greedy little devils I've heard of some people using a pipe
to drop the sturgeon food down to the bottom of the pond so they get a chance to get it, while feeding the koi on the surface,
Gotta be a little sneaky sometimes....................

My 1m diamondback sturgeon has always eaten off the top since we got him over 10 years ago. He comes up when he knows we are feeding the koi in the pond. We have a sterlet and albino starlet that every now and again come up for food. But only a few times a month.
