Anyone keep sterlets? They seem perfect instead of big sturgeon...

I have always wanted a sturgeon, but my pond at 2500gal just isn't big enough, but then I realised that a couple of sterlets would be perfect. Slow growing and generally only reach a metre long. But internet does fib sometimes. Could anyone with experience tell me if I could house these for life in 4.0m by 2.5m by 1.2m deep pond?

No, but I am thinking about a sturgeon myself, my pond is 4600 gallons, i'll have to take a look at sterlets if I can't get my hands on a sturgeon, I was hoping to get one that someone was moving on due to size

I'll be following this thread with interest
4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
    2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
    Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
    Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
    2 x 18,000 lh pumps
    Idealseal MS290

    Golden Sterlet (not an albino)

White edged sterlet (standard with a fancy trade name I presume)

    Albino Sterlet.

No I'm just researching before I buy. They don't seem too much bother:
Proper Food. Set feeder to 11pm / 5am when koi are less active.
More oxygen - most koi ponds over indulge on air by far anyway. I may run airlift instead of pumps so that might sort that anyway but would need monitoring as they grow.
Treatments are fine. Just add more air.
I watched an Adam Julyan video of treating the pond with sturgeon in. There's no major issues when you look into it.

I thought I saw on one of Adam Julyan's videos that he had to remove his sturgeon to treat? not sure what he was treating

That was treating PP for costia. He only took the sturgeon out because it was 24degrees water temp (his pond is indoors) and you can't carry enough oxygen at that temp. I have seen another one where he leaves the sturgeon in and explains how. I think it's this one but can't look at it in detail right now

Perhaps an emergency show pool for sterlets during treatment if its over 24degrees in the water. Can't see it happing in an outdoor pond as it won't be 24deg when parasites turn up. Unless you add fish late in season without QT.

.... I've actually got no idea what temps to expect, but 24deg seems way high?

I've got a couple of sturgeon in with koi. They are fascinating creatures. They look so prehistoric - well I suppose because they are.

From my research you should not use pp with them as they are sensitive to drops in oxygen. I've seen julians video but not sure I'd personally chance pp with sturgeon in, especially in warmer water.

You also aren't meant to use formalin with them, which rules out koi strength fmg. I used eradic with sturgeon. But it's so weak I don't think that'll harm anything - including the parasites lol

Also you're not meant to use salt with sterlets specifically. Other types of sturgeon can tolerate much higher levels of salt than koi can as they migrate to the sea. So another thing to be mindful of if treating.

However there are alternatives to use that should be (no guarantees of course) ok with sturgeon. E.g colombo alparex instead of fmg. So acriflavine and Malachite is ok. And ct and fluke treatments seem fine too.

I'm with alburglar. If you get some you can always take them out and put them in a quarantine or grow on whilst the pond is being treated.

Fortunately they tend not to suffer from parasites like koi do, but can still be carriers, so would still need treating to avoid recontaminating the pond.

I had some albino stertlets when I first had my pond and they did grow slowly over the 2 years I had them. As they were small it was easy to remove them and QT when using some of the chemicals previously mentioned by TWNS. larger ones will be a right ole challenge though....!

    Cheers
