    Soft water setup

    Hi,

Can some people chime in on what I might need. Thereís a lot of info on here but itís a bit of a minefield and everybodies setups are different so knowing exactly what I need is proving difficult to understand.

i want to run an RO unit to run a lower ph and softer water. Iím in a 21000L pond. Was thinking of getting a unit that steadily trickles in and out. So with a 10% water change is 300L a day.

What should I be adding to the pond to make sure the ph and kh are correct?

I currently dose clay and filter bacteria weekly, nothing else.

    Hi
what are parameters at the moment and how low did you want your ph?
If you are running RO you will either have to mix some water back in to buffer or add sodium bicarbonate (which will bring your ph to 8.4) I do also add clay once a week but this isn’t really going to alter the Kh by much.

    So I’m currently at

    8.2 PH
    10 KH
    19 GH
0.15% salinity (bringing down after salt treatment)
    23 Celsius
    21000L pond
Pump fed nexus 320 with Draco drum drop in
Skimmer to 2x110w UV to sieve

    my 2 penneth
Ph will vary depending on many factors,
if you want to acheive a lower Kh the Ph will fall naturally and find it's own level.

i ran my pond for about 9 months on RO using a 3 pod with 3 x 75gpd membranes trickle in/out. can make about around 250ml/min
and ended up having to test daily for KH and dose with sodium bicarbonate to maintain Kh.
i ran at a KH of 4 and ph around 7.4 though this swings during the day, and more so with a lower Kh.

i found it tedious in the end constantly dosing to maintain Kh, and went back to just using a dechlorinator trickle in/out.
my ph is slightly higher at around 7.7 to 7.8 but swings less during the day, epecially sunny days. and KH is now rocksolid.
overall my fish seem happier with the better stability over lower Kh.
this video by Kevin Ellis helped play a part in my decision to ditch RO .

also how old is your pond?
as newer ponds will run at a higher ph to start with until biological processes lower it naturally.

My pond is about 4 years old but installed nexus about 6 weeks ago, I ran it alongside my existing filtration for 3 weeks to mature a little before I removed the old system.

im quite deadset On running RO as I want to lower the PH and hardness

It’s not hard to run, you will improve the hardness (no more calcium build up) and can lower the KH.
the pH that will probably stay about the same.
are you going to dose it or mix water back in ?
i dose mine manually but do intend to get a meter and dosing pump think it will be a lot easier.
the other thing that I am wanting to get is a water softener to save the membranes.
i do mix back a little water still if I purge my bottom drains

When you say dose it or mix the water back in what do you mean?

i was intending On having a pump on a timer pump out approx 300L a day, then an R.O. unit that tops up the pond when the water level drops using a float valve. Bit of a bodge job but should work fine?
