4040 membrane output?
Hi all
For those of you that run 4040 membranes can you tell me how much output of pure water you are getting from them per minute?
Also what size of booster pump you are using?
Many thanks
Andy

Hi Andy,
How's things ?
I've had my 4040membrane for about 8 months now. The feed comes from the house water softener via a Aquatec pump.
At the minute with cold water (7.8°C) I'm only getting 2.3 litres per minute of good water at 11 tds and waste water of 2.14 litres per minute with a tds of 600. This is a ratio of 52/48. In summer I was getting 60/40 with 3.5 litres of good water per minute.
I bought the pump from http://www.becktech.co.uk/, it's a DDP 550 24 VDC pump with an open flow of 2.7 GPM using 3.6 Amps @ 70 PSI. I'm sure there are better pumps today with a higher pressure and using 230 VAC. At the time it was all I could find.
How's the recycling going? I've stopped at the minute because I have a pond tds of 114 and the Koi seem happy at this.

Hi Dave
Nice to hear from you!
I'm good thanks. How are you?
That's good water production with that set up. Are you running the pump continually or on a timer to stop the pump overheating?
I am looking at going with 4040 membranes in the future after trashing the membranes on my 1200gpd unit due to a faulty auto flush solenoid!
I have not been running RO for a while now as I want something that is going to be more reliable than I have been using in the past.
Priority for me at the moment is to get the filter house & pond sorted out this year and then get back into the RO again. I have plans on what I am going to do, so interesting times ahead! Also going to get back into recycling this year as I feel there is a future with this form of using RO in our ponds.

I run it on a timer Andy. At the moment I only run it for 1/2 hour a day to replace the water used by the drum During last summer it ran for a total of 3 hours a day to replace evaporation & a small water change per day.
Plans this year are to place my Anoxic filter outdoors to increase the flow and to have a few plants so that I can feed even more

Hi Dave
Great stuff at least you will be getting things sorted out.
I am looking forward to running 4040 membranes this year and sorting out the filter house and installing the other set of showers.
Are you still cleaning your membranes?

Hi Keith
Thanks for the info on output and the pump. All food for thought.
Looking forward to getting one of these installed.
Hi Dave
I think these membranes are far better than the old 150s and 300s we all used first of all.
Good idea with the softener and it will certainly help the membranes!
I wonder if a softener would do anything with your pond water before recycling it

Hi Dave
Yes I would think you are right? I did not think about it that way. I am trying to get round the cleaning of the membranes if I was recycling water. I need to come up with something to stop biofilm build up?
I have already cleaned membranes as you have. It may come to setting up a better cleaning process when recycling?

Hi Dave
Thanks for that. You must have good mains pressure?

3 bar at the house but pond system is a run of about 70m away so feed to the RO is a rather less than this. One of the reasons I went for 4040 was that the output unpumped is generally enough for my needs. If I need a lot in a hurry then its pressure pump time, this increases output by 3.
I would think that with a recirculating system then a regular biofilm clean routine with alkaline solution would be pretty easy to set up.

Hi Dave
That's good Dave. The 4040 unit is the way to go for sure!
I am going to set up the same cleaning system I used on the 1200gpd unit that I was running. It worked very well. The alkaline solution worked great at cleaning the biofilm and there was no need to use acid. I will need to buy some more alkaline stuff though as i'm nearly out.

Hi Keith
Not sure about what make as It was given to me?
I was cleaning the membrane for 1 hour at 50 psi with the RO alkaline solution heated to 30c. Then flushed for 30 mins in pure RO.
Now need some more Alkaline solution as I have not got any left.
There is lots of information about cleaning membranes on the internet.

Keith
I am using Acepta 2069 and 2068 one is an alkaline solution for the biofilm, the other an acid for the calcium scale.

Hi Dave
I think that's the same stuff Dave Collins uses.
Did you have to buy a large drum of the Acepta 2068 and 2069?
What is your cleaning regime?
Andy
