    Bacto plus psb

Hi has anyone used the Bacto plus psb for starting a new filter, do you put in bio or straight to the pond. Thanks in advance. It doesn’t really say either way in the bottle but reading between the lines it’s loves light and my bio chambers are covered....

Generally, filter bacteria favour dark conditions.

If the product is intended for promoting filter bacteria, then it seems a little odd that the product contents would favour light.

...so, I just checked on the product, and it's not specifically intended for boosting filter bacteria - it contains photosynthetic bacteria and certain strains geared more towards breaking down organic waste in the pond, and perhaps competing with algae for nutrients (it's very similar to Microbe Lift Clean and Clear).

Therefore, it should ideally be added to the pond, and not the filter (although it certainly wouldn't cause any harm to the different bacteria in the filter).

If you want a product specifically to boost the bacteria in the filter, then you need a different product. However, breaking down unnecessary organic compounds in the water may indirectly promote the healthy activity of filter bacteria.

Thanks for your reply, I guessed that it was a two for one Jobby, pond and filter, I’ve done both so no harm done, once again thanks for replying.

Confession - I couldn't find detailed homepage info on the product. All I can see is that they do a 'filter start' liquid or gel, and your product. Hence my belief that your product is focused upon photosynthetic (pond-resident) bacteria and breaking down organic sediments, etc., rather than being aimed at directly boosting filter bacteria.

It is very ambiguous in the language used, because it says:

"The BactoPlus products contain selected bacteria strains for a quick start of the filter, effective removal of sludge and an optimal biology in (koi)ponds."

But it seems to be referring to those capabilities being offered within their range of products, but it isn't clear if every product contains filter bacteria. Why offer seperate products if all products contain the same bacteria? So, it seems likely that there must be some ommissions in each product, in order to differentiate them from each other.

Perhaps you are right and it may contain filter bacteria, too. Does your bottle specifically state what strains of bacteria are in it? Maybe all their fluids and gels contain filter bacteria, but the Bacto Plus PSB is the only one that additionally contains photosynthetic bacteria?

Yes quite the conundrum with this product, took my advice from my local dealer who said he put this stuff in all
The time on new filters, maybe I’ve picked the wrong bottle as your link suggest their are 2 bottles with the lead name of filter start Bacto plus psbBacto plus psb but yes no harm no foul and if it kicks the ammonia into touch inadvertently then no down side. Once again thanks a lot Bacto plus psb
