    Very nice,

We love acers and I've trained ours. With patience the "dome shape" can be achieved "with a suitable case for treatment."
Now I just prune them a bit each year, the larger of the two with garden shears! They are both Acer Palmatums.

This one must be close to thirty years old, it's more than eight feet across, I try to keep it not much wider than the circle of pavers I put round it a few years ago. It's in my avatar picture.

I think I paid seven pounds for it.

There's one in a pot, not much bigger than this and of an unattractive shape in Bent's Garden Centre, they wanted £3,000 for it last year.

This one is less than ten years old it cost between forty and fifty quid in B&Q.

This is a different kind of acer in our front garden. I actually moved it from in front of out tea-house after I'd built it.
The leaves go from bright pink as they come out to a beautiful shade of green. I prune it to achieve the "lollypop shape."

I'd forgotten there was this previous thread on acers with a bit of information from a few contributors which might be of interest to anyone thinking of adding an acer to enhance their pool and garden.
