Yup added a nice little blob from the glue gun to hold it in place.

The nokia 6021 comes with a charger that is 5.8v DC.
I piggy backed the live and earth wires from the charger to feed my 6V DC relay.

    One question I have.

Once the "pond" calls my mobile, I answer and then hang up. However the nokia 6021 then has a message on the screen about the length of the call and how I won't be charged for it if I make another call over 2 mins long. You need to press end to exit this screen. Anyone know a way of getting round this and just getting it back into the normal mode after I hang up the phone ?

I used to use the old key pad and lay it over the contacts, it worked well until I lost the keypad!

What would happen if you declined rather than answered the call?

I assume I would get a very long voice mail with just the sound of a medo 120 blowing air into a nexus and the constant splash of a cetus sieve

Umm, well if you get a call generally it is ringing to say your power has gone off. So the voicemail will more likely to be fairly silent.

If you can answer a call and terminate it quickly, it will only cost a few pennies. If not you will get a 2-3 minute voicemail depending on your provider. Which will cost a few more pennies but it is a very, very small price to pay for a power failure alert.

I have just finished project 'power cut' this is a simple to make device that will phone my mobile if the power supply to the pond ever goes off.

My area has had a few power cuts over the last couple of years, the longest was just over 25 hours with no power. I have a back up generator that will keep the pond running if this happens, when I did the pond wiring I built in a couple of industrial power sockets that allows me to unplug from the consumer unit and plug back into the generator, quick and easy, fire up the generator and everything is back up and running.

This is of no help if I'm not at home though, so I have been searching around for a device that will let me know if the power fails. There are plenty of off the shelf items that will do this, average cost is around £100+. So after a bit of research i came up with this....see pictures.

All you need is an old mobile phone, a relay and a housing. First job is to get a pay as you sim card, fit it in the donor phone, set the ringer to silent, one touch answer to off and speed dial to on. Then put your number in and set it to ring you off a speed dial button, no5 for example.

You now have a phone that when you press no5 it will ring you up. Next step is to take the phone apart, strip it down so you have access to the key pad, solder a length of wire to button no5 (speaker wire is fine) after you have done this then put a blob of hot melt over the top to secure it, then reassemble the phone. Now when you short the 2 wires together it will speed dial no5 and you will have a call, name this call 'pond power cut' or whatever you wish.

Next step is to put these 2 wires into a relay, you need a relay that is normally closed when it is not powered up. Connect the relay to your ponds consumer unit if you have one, when the relay is powered up the contact will open, when the power to the relay fails the contacts will close, make the circuit and dial your number.

I have mine connected to the busbar on the consumer unit, this way if anything in the pond trips the main breaker on the consumer unit, I get a call, also if all the power to the house and pond goes out, again I get a call.

There are numerous ways to connect the relay if you don't have a consumer unit on your pond, a plug on the relay plugged into a socket that runs your pond etc....

This is so simple to do, cost wise, an old mobile FOC, a sim card with £5 on it, a relay £10 if that, a housing £5 and about an hour to make.

I have added a switch onto mine, this way I can test it now and again as some mobile phone companys will cut the sim off if not used every now and again.

The last 2 pics show a couple of old phones I did yesterday, I was bored lol, the nokia 2323 is a little tricky, the 6310 is easy as is the one I used for mine which is a 6021.
Hi do you by any chance have any of these gizmos ready to go that you would sell?
    Regards
    Steve

It's a must have. I lost hundreds of malawi cichlids two years ago as electric board was doing work on my road. They were informed of my fish, before the project started and failed to let me know when they were doing the work. I told them that I required a generator if my electricity was going off. They double booked the work and did it without my permission. Anyway I came in from work to find around 60% of my stock floating. It got nasty between me and the electric board and solicitors were brought in. Luckily I froze a large number of fish. They ended up paying me compensation but wasn't anywhere near the amount the fish were worth as a large number were wild caught breeding pairs.

Lesson learnt I went out and got a pre made of the about and although it hasn't gone off yet it's good the have peace of mind.

Nope it's a 6021, had it sat in a draw so thought I would give it a go.

I could probably help with a Power Cut 2.0.. an open source microcontroller/GSM system?

I was looking at ways to reduce the amount of wash water from my drum using a high/low water pressure selector for example. Also make the drum a little more intelligent - perhaps record data to a card using wifi sensors and then learn the daily rhythms of the pond vs temperature etc.

I've a degree in software engineering.. parallel & distributed systems including realtime, developed drones and telescope and astronomy camera control systems. So it could be easy to make generic way todo this - including a "help" should the power go (could use a hall detector on the power line). A system like this would simply run at 5V (max 12 for valves for example) making it safe for people to DIY without going down the mains power route..
Oh.. and professionally.. integrated mobile operator networks, SMSCs, GSM devices etc for about 12 years.. now work in a quantum cryptography computing company.

You could use an Arduino, add a hall sensor(s) and a GSM shield. Add a battery backup with self charging and you could monitor a number of mains devices using the sensors to detect the electrical current flowing. If the power in any drops or shows problems - use the GSM modem to send an SMS.

One issue using pay-as-you-go SIMs and running out of credit, if you don't update the credit for a period then the SIM the operator may recycle it.

How often do you have to top up a pay as you go sim for it to stay active?
2660 Gallons. 4" Bottom Drain and Skimmer. Draco Solum 16 Drum. Anoxic Filtration. Air lift returns.

Probably worth checking with the operator as each operator varies.

You'd have thought that if it has money on the system then it would be ok.. however from experience in the biz in the past (globally) this can depend on the contract weasel words.

"you need to use it for at least one chargeable activity - like sending a text or topping up - every 180 days."
    This seems pretty typical.

So a monthly "ok" ping should be fine.

If only you had a flow meter on the waste.. "Hello this is your filter - this month I have extracted NNNN litres of poop. Your welcome and have a nice day!" (in the voice of Marvin)

Anyone had a look at this: alta-wireless-ac-current-meter---20-amp---aa-battery-powered

Ahh I see - you need their gateway product... so this all starts looking expensive.

This would be my way of doing it: https://www.dfrobot.com/product-1486.html

Then use a smart WiFi/GSM Arduino style microcontroller.
    WIFI: https://www.instructables.com/id/Pro...sing-Arduino-/

You could go for a GSM shield: https://store.arduino.cc/arduino-gsm...grated-antenna

Or you could simply use a combined controller and gsm: like this or this from farnell (includes a decent power microcontroller): https://uk.farnell.com/arduino/abx00...-m0/dp/2851779 however it's likely to use the microcontroller for the GSM air-interface control like most. Or this GSM board: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1946
