Thread: Air lift pump

    Air lift pump

I’m rebuilding my pond and am hoping to incorporate 2 x airlifts. I’ve seen lots of designs and remember someone on here posting a really simple option which involves a large u-bend and putting an air stone down the riser tube. Has anyone actually built and used this? It may not be the most efficient option but would save so much hassle of having to have a 2m deep water tank. My pond is in-ground so pretty challenging.

Hi mate, yes I did a "U" bend one a couple of years back and works really great.
I used pushfit 110mm pipe and made an air chamber on the rising part of the U bend near the bottom, but I believe you can drop an airstone down.

Thanks John, I have a diagram that I would like to post but this koi forum site is terrible. Is there another platform that people are using for koi chat? There are lots of facebook groups but these seem to be very different. It’s a shame - so much expertise and knowledge in the archive of koi forum.

Hope you can understand the diagram, the 4" T just through the pond wall has an air escape but I blanked it off as it works better straight through with no air outlet giving more forceful current, and quieter.
Works really well and cheap to run with 1 x 80ltr air pump, which also does air bar and grow on.
In winter I use a smaller air pump useing 40 watt and still works great.

You really don't need them all that deep either. Mine work well at 90-100cm.
I think 1.5m is ideal but you'll definitely get useful flow at less than that.
I also think that my 3inch airlift works way better than the 4 inch, but that's visual,. It rises higher and stronger than a 4inch with the same air,.but I can't say for sure it's actually flowing more volume.
