DIY self cleaning airstone that does not clog

I have tried many airstones in aquariums and they all ended up clogged within a few weeks. I installed an airpump two years ago on my 24 m3 koi pond, because the population had risen and there wasn't enough oxygen during summer nights. It is an Oase AquaOxy 2000. The airstones that came with the filter broke easily, because the plastic material had dried, so it was fragile. The first year I used the airpump with a DIY 8 outlet. I used 4,6mm T connectors, connected to each other. But the air bubbles were big and they bursted ugly, while sometimes, when the power was down and the airpump went off, the outlets where clogged by debris.

So I decided to use a self cleaning shower head, to which I attached the air tubes. Air goes through the shower head's holes, creating even and quite small bubbles, which help oxygenate water and create a sufficient vertical current to disturb the water column. The self cleaning holes are made of silicon, so while air passes through them, they expand and contract, breaking up any salt residues. I used it last summer and it never clogged.

This is how it looks like. It's not charming but I can't see it in the bottom of the pond. I have connected the two air hoses to a 1/2'' pipe fit to the shower head. A building block keeps the shower head in place. It never clogs!

You can try with a different color (black) if it is visible. The only think you have to be careful is the silicon self cleaning holes. Your shower head must have those elastic silicon holes.

I hope this could help you too.

This might just be a stroke of genius! - I think a Screwfix order may be required, and some testing doing.

It is much easier than you can imagine. Here is a picture of a very basic prototype with materials from my garden (hoses, anchor, connectors etc). I only got the shower head from the local super market to see if it would work for more than a month without any maintenance. It worked for 5 months without any problems. Next spring I shall try to find a more attractive shower head
