    In-line Dechlorinator Refurb

I currently have one of the 12" EA inline dechlorinators , which is getting ready to be replaced .

Rather than throw it away , I`m going to see if I can refurb it with new carbon , and hopefully save a few quid . The new units are £75 .

I think the ends must be glued in place , so Ive cut it in half and removed the granulated carbon , as can be seen in the picture .

Ive ordered 10 kg at a cost of £45 on ebay . Thats enough for 5 re-fills , so thats just under £10 a pop ! I had a spare 4" rubber connector , to rejoin the two halves , so if it works out should be a good saving

I`ll let you know how it goes .

When you look at how one of those EA units is made you see why they can only cope with such a slow trickle, and also how mahoosively overpriced they are. But for anyone who owns one the hack you’ve done is definitely a good way or reusing the thing.

Thanks Lara . Yes , they do seem way overpriced for what they are (a bit of a theme with EA) , but the recommended flow rate of 4 LPM , would turn my 12000L pond in 2 days - so wont be an issue for me .

So far Ive never had a letter from the water board telling me Ive got a leak somewhere

Will do , John . I think the tricky bit will be refilling and getting the 2 halves back together - but Ive had a practice with the old carbon , and should be ok .

What is S/T , by the way ?

Ive actually had the water board turn up in a van to check my ‘leak’ because of unusually high usage. I showed him the pond and he left

I saw the thread - very funny but I don't like seeing the water board in the area - in case they've come to fit meters

Replaced the carbon , yesterday and put the filter back . Seems to be working ok - passed the "tea cup test" , anyway . The one on the right is the untreated tap water , by the way

I only used around 1.25 kg of carbon , so only cost about £6 - although I did have to buy a 4" rubber coupler - thought I had one , but it was 3" (£9), but still a good saving .
