    DIY drum started.

Well I allways said I would like to do one so here goes.
Now I am doing this for a 350gal grow on and it is going to be as cheap as I can do it so I will be cutting corners.

Wanted to get a plastic box for the drum but couldn't find one the right size so got a sheet of 18mm osb board and made one.
Not really what I wanted to use but see how it goes.

Will fiberglass it or pond paint it not sure yet.
You can see the drum is out of a washing machine and I have also used the drum housing or bits of it.

The 10mm stainless rebar supports the drum and can be adjusted to get a nice seal on the dirty side.

Any comments or suggestions welcome as this is planned as I go along.

The metal drum is encased in a water tight housing which I used.

I cut the front off the housing as it had a lip for the seal and used that but wasnt happy with it so after a couple of tinies it hit me to do it in reverse and lovely seal now.

Interesting build so far John. As it’s Diy and your not sure if it’s even going to work then wood is ideal for your situation.

Is the drum turning ok how you currently have it? I’m wondering how it’s going to hold up once the water is in is and flow is putting pressure on it. Is there no way you can have a centre pin on the backside of the drum to keep it centralised?

Maybe I’m over thinking. It and it won’t be a problem.

    Yes Mike good shout.
I am useing the drum bulkhead which has a water seal then two bearings then another water seal and to be honest it is super strong.
I was going to put two rollers on the inlet end bottom but to be honest I dont think I need them, but saying that not hard to do.

The stainless rods make it super strong as I have two on top and two on the bottom.
    Open to all suggestions.

I would add a bypass hole - easily added with a paster board hole drill piece - then use the off cut and a larger square piece behind as a stopper. Secure the stopper with a bolt top and bottom for normal use. This would allow you to bypass the drum for emergencies and for medication.

Also a removable chute is a bit of a godsend - it allows a much better clean inside if location allows.

That boarding by the way isn't waterproof - even with marine varnish. Damp gets it, it expands. Ply may be better and give a better box to apply a sealing flexible fish safe epoxy against.

You'll want a lid - the spray off the nozzles will splay and the mist will drift.
