    Diy plans for sieve

    hi
considering building a sieve does anyone have plans or suggestions. i know where to source everything apart from sieve material and a good solid large oblong box fish safe no need to to be UV safe as it will be in inside fish house.
It could be that by the time ive priced everything up it could be just as cheap to buy a Aquaforte compact sieve which i know will work where as there could be a little trail and error with a diy model. i have drawn up plans but unsure wether sieve should have a straight drop or have a bow in it..

    any advice most welcome
    keith

    Hi Keith,
I made one and it works well used this for the box
    https://www.3jc.co.uk/parts-and-stor...-lid-r92-litre
A 92 ltr,you need the depth and if you can get more than 50 cm then better.
I used the Mesh company In Warrington and it is best to get a good vertical slope and to be honest mine could have a better slope.
Think I put the build on here in this section but it was copied from "Wrightys " seive.
The mesh would be better if it was wedge wire but it is hard to find and very expensive.

I am thinking of doing a drum for the grow on and only in the thinking stage.
    John

    hi john
many thanks for reply its nothing like id sketched but certainly given me food for thought. will keep working on it and take note the deeper the box the better and i suppose the longer the length will give better retention time.

    take care

I've got mesh that is 125 microns? Any thoughts on whether this will be too fine?

It all seems fairly straightforward to build, but was wondering what's the best way to set up the waste pipe at the bottom of the mesh.

I've seen one youtube video where someone used a square pvc channel and put a tank connector in the bottom of that.

How did you do your one John?

I did try one on top of the seive but found it a lot of messing about,Dave vr6 did a YouTube and it was ok for him.
I have an exit on the bottom of the seive but I find it easier to take it out and blast it with the hose have to do that three times a day on the grow on.

Cant remember what the mesh is on my seive,I used some guttering on the top of the shower to catch the waste and exit via 1.5ins tank connecter.
Think I did a post on it will have a look.

So John, following your thread and Dave's video, I've built a sieve to go in the top of my shower filter. I'll have to put some pics up when I get a chance.

Having tested it out 125 microns is definitely too small for the sieve. It might be ok if the sieve were longer, as the water would have more of a chance to drop through the mesh. But in a 35l really useful box, some of the water (a 10k vari pump @30%) is pouring into the waste tray.

Not sure if I can be bothered to get some 200 mesh and knock up another sieve. So will drill some overflow holes in the side of the waste tray/tube and will put some mesh over them to prevent solids from getting through to the shower. I'm hoping that will do it.

If anyone wants some 125 microns stainless steel mesh (grade 304) I've got some left over.

    Here it is.

Got it up and running. But need to seal the waste tray in and plumb the waste pipe in for the waste tray.

Looks good and similar to what I did,so are you doing a spray bar or just a pipe over the side?

I had the same most of the water going straight into the drain tray, think it needs a more vertical mesh so a deeper container or spray the water backwards ie up the mesh slope to force the water through the mesh.

    Good job T white.

    Cheers John.

I've already got a spray bar for the top tier of the shower before I made the sieve. But I'm not sure that'll work well with the mesh as a fair amount of water will be pouring straight into the waste tray from the spray bar. So have that a miss.

I've got the pipe pouring vertically onto the mesh. I've got the unexpected problem that I get some splashback hitting the lid of the box, tracks along the underside of the lid and is dripping off the edge of the lid into my filter room. I've put a splash guard in but doesn't see to have stopped it 100%. Need to find a solution to that one.

I like your idea about aiming the water flow back at the sieve, rather than down the sieve. I might give that a try, but it may end up making the splash back issue worse.

Otherwise I'm pretty pleased with it, considering how cheap and easy it was to make.

It's already caught a fair amount of fines that, somehow, had got round my drum. I'm wondering if it's dead bio film that's come off the k1 as it has that light brown slimy consistency.

In terms of you saying making the mesh more vertical, I thought the opposite to you. I would've though the more horizontal the mesh is, the more likely water will drop through it rather than run over/down it. But I could be wrong.

Think a lot is trial and error,I used solvent weld 1.5ins but not glued so I could turn it in different directions.
You could go horizontal but I think you would need good high sides I gave up on mine in the end and made a whole seive and that needs cleaning twice a day.

Thinking of making a drum now.

So I came up with a state of the art solution to the splashback in the sieve causing water to drop from the lid.

It involved a bit of old guttering and an angle grinder.

Since putting the bit of guttering in I now don't have water dripping out of the shower. Problem solved!

    Cheers John.

Yeah it's working well. I still have some water flowing into the waste chute. That's due to the mesh being too fine. So if anyone is planning on making this sieve I'd say don't go any finer than 200 micron mesh (I've got 125 microns).

I still haven't sorted the waste pipe for the waste tray, just have to work on that one next.
