I scrounged some pvc trim for some pvc cladding off my dad. Not much help I know. But b&q do some 25mm X 25mm pvc corner trim for about £4.

That's what i was going to buy had my dad not had some.

I may just have to steal this idea and use it on my skimmer line. I assume it would have to be at the same height as the pond though being gravity fed? I was thinking I could have the inlet coming in the side onto the mesh then drain out the bottom to the pump but I guess if I don't have the pull of the pump I won't get much water drawn into the skimmer mouth in the first place?

Are they the same make (really useful box)? If not make sure they sit on top of each other (without lids on) rather within each other. Most plastic boxes seem to sit within each other so wouldn't work for a shower.

The only other thing is, if those boxes are higher, do you have the space (vertically) if they will be in a shed, garage etc for where you plan to site them? My one only just fit in under the ceiling In my shed, as I have it sat on my bio chamber.

I personally think they need to be under cover/indoors as I'm sure the plastic will degrade much quicker if outdoors and exposed to UV, heat, cold etc...

I'm not sure if it will. Without flow control (like gravity sieves have) you may find it is mostly submerged? Will you try attempting John's flow control system with the ball cock float?

If you had the pump before the sieve, that'd probably be easier to set up. Does your skimmer have a basket? If so that'd protect the pump from large debris. Obviously the pump will chop small stuff up, which is not ideal, but hopefully the sieve would then catch it all.

In that case. I'd snap them up. That's pretty cheap!

To maintain strength, I didn't cut the bottom of the boxes out. I just drilled 8 or 9mm holes (one in each hexagon) and put some cut down filter grid in the bottom of each box. That way you still get even distribution of water over each tier, but the grid keeps the Media off the holes and helps stop the bottom of the boxes bulging in the middle under the weight of media and water.

Yeh this is where I am not sure either. I don't think I am skilled enough to make Johns masterpiece! I just wonder if the flow from the skimmer without a pump would be adequate as its only the top inch or 2 of water so I would imagine it wouldn't have much pull. I do have a basket in the skimmer but would need to be pump fed before and after then which is more electric etc, which is the opposite of what I am trying to achieve! currently running one pump on a lower setting (vario) and my air pump with uv's and skimmer pump off.

I did think this too maybe for my skimmer line return as I only run it through a UV currently, but If I got something like a Cetus Sieve then could use an airlift as the return after the sieve. My only concern is literally the pull from the skimmer but this way I could run it off my air pump that I already have which is 50l and I only use it through an air bottom drain, the majority is dumped out so the air isn't intense through the drain so if that is sufficient power then it could work out well.
