    New member koi pond ideas

Hi all, new to koi keeping but iv got a idea in my head which i would like to share with positive and negative comments welcome, as i say i am new.

Coming from keeping various marine saltwater aquariums for the last ten years i understand filtration stability with parameters ect so id like to think i was clued up in that respect. My idea...
2M x 2M x 4ft deep with a gravity fed bottom drain into a "rear sump style" baffled filter filter will consist of 3 chamber of the jap mat 1st chamber and alfragrog in the other 2, will also having taps on each one so these can be drained with having some type of egg crate at the bottom for detritus to sit without clogging the and effecting the grog.

This will then be pumped to a home made bakki shower again filled with grog

Am i over doing it with filtration? and shower?

Pond will be made from 4x4 tanned timber with holding braces and 1200x600 kingspan/insulation and a cladded front (unsure what material yet)

Inside will be 22mm plywood and either fibre glass or liner

Iv took into consideration overflows and have that to do also

    Am i missing anything?

    Think i have covered everything

Advise would be great thanks all

Welcome to the forum , Daniel .

Sounds like you've got the basis of a plan together . The first thing I`d say is can you possibly go bigger ? Those dimensions will give you just over 1000 gallons which in terms of a koi pond is pretty small .

Many of us have started off building similar sized ponds , and ended up starting over on a bigger scale .

On your filtration , its always better to have too much , than not enough !

As said try and go larger if you can. And a bottom drain. Is a must with koi in my opinion. And you can never over filter. The more the better.
    Welcome mate. And enjoy.

Hi I have a vario pump ea vario. Vario pumps are all the rage now. Jabeo vario pumps. Just to name a couple. My rule of thumb on filters air pumps. Water pumps
Is double what you need. That way if you alter things you can always go bigger. So if you want a 10000lph get a 20000lph.
It's all about what people can afford. Plus you lose flow on bends friction loss and head height. Do your pipe work in 2 inch as well. I have just changed mine from 1 1/2
To 2 inch on my returns to accommodate
Bigger pumps for more flow. Hope this helps

    Hi
I used to have a Multi Chamber filter with Alfa Grog. One of the drawbacks is that it can harbour parasites .After some time the water tends to track through the same routes effectively making other areas dead. Have you thought about a moving bed such as K1.

Thanks all, after much research and talks with a local pond builder im going to go with a easy pod, saying that i will be forever cleaning the planned filter, i will end up hating this chore and not enjoying the pond, which makes sense as i want maintenance to a minimum as such
