18.3c losing 0.5 degree's overnight due to nagging wind chill, daytime temps increasing slowly much due to wind chill as easterly wind even in sunshine is cool especially in the shade which my pond is....

I've got 60m of light duty pond hose. The hose is 18mm/22mm internal and external diameter. And used standard 22mm pipe clips and cable ties to hold it all in place.
Just hope the type of hose and length I've gone for does the trick. As I can't fit much more in there.

Should be ok there mine is a similar length but its surprising how much poke you need from the pump,I use a 3000 ltr one.

Right so had my first trial with the heater on the pergola roof today, before I fix it all into place and put the perspex cover on.
I used a 40watt 3k lph pump that i already had and started out at 37 degrees (water was already in pipe when checked for leaks). It then dropped to 23C at a rate of 1.8lpm. Not bad considering the water temp going into the pump is 14 degrees and it's not even particularly sunny where I am.
So I've ordered the next pump down which is 2.5k lph, 25watt and still has a head height of 2.5m so should be just enough to get the water up to the heater.
I'll test that once it arrives.
I've also found a cheap way to automate it too!
I'll buy one of these:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inkbird-Tem...inkbird&sr=8-3
Then I'll run the temperature sensor into the solar heater to monitor the air temp. I'll then plug the water pump into the cooling socket on the thermostat controller and set it to come on once the air temp in the heater gets to say 30 or 40 Celsius. I can always adjust this to get optimum flow v temp balance, or lower it in winter so that it still comes on on relatively sunny days and hey Presto!
I'll have an automatic solar heater that only operates when it's sunny/warm enough to do so!

I got 2 lengths of 30m in the end - so 60m in total.

Ok thanks mate, as mine was only temporary thinking of making a more permanent one from irrigation pipe.
Think I used 70 mtrs on mine cant remember now but it was cheapo hose pipe and to be honest not sure if it is leaching into the pond when very hot.John

I did see your post about your fish acting up. Are you sure a rubber hose would really leach something harmful into the water?
I would've thought the heat would just cause the rubber to degrade/crack quicker, but not actually cause chemicals to be released.
Tbh one of the reasons I went for pond hose for the solar heater is it's been tried and tested on ponds for years so I thought it should be ok. I just hope it doesn't start tearing/leaking too soon being left exposed to the sunlight all the time. Time will tell.

I dont know mate, with what's going on in the pond I am asking myself what have I done different and the heater was one, agree I dont really think it's that but it has to be suspected.

Should have said one of the hoses I used I have just found out on reading from Toolstation it says not to be used with hot water, didnt see that previously so I have to suspect it.
Sorry think it was Srewfix.John

Turn it off John for a few days and see if they pick up wrote on Fred's '' Costia '' thread about that leeching into

Black HPDE pipe 25mm 50m is about £30. Only concern I'd have is UV stability longer term. HPDE and black carbon: https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...14157X19302357 . So as long as the HPDE piping has the black carbon additive - it's about as UV stable as you're going to get. Max temps are 60degC with short spike of 80. So the flow must go!
This is interesting - it's hinting that you'll get about 10 years max out of the current HPDE black piping against UV: tn-47-pe-resin-testing.pdf14000l, my mutts: Chargoi (2010), Doitsu (2022), Tancho (2022), Kujaku (2022), Hi Utusri (2022)

Interesting that about the HDPE pipe. If what I've got rigged up fails, I'll have to give that a go. Pretty cheap for the length that you get.
I've finally sorted the pipe work, checked for leaks and got the perspex lid on. Looks really neat.
Next step is to test the lower rated pump with the heater in position to see what flow I get.
