Temp around 6pm last night was 17.3, at 10am this morning it had dropped slightly to 16.9, had the solar heater going again today, it was trickling a litre every 75 to 85 seconds and was getting 26 degree return temp for quite a few hours, water went from 16.9 late morning to 18.1 by this evening, first time i have seen 18 degree's this year....

Thanks for the ongoing updates. Loving it. I'm still sourcing the bits for the solar heater.
I know most have used hose pipe, but I'm going to use 60m (if it works, i might then get a further 30m - space providing - so a total of 90m) of 18mm light duty pond hose.
I know it goes brittle in sunlight after a while, but I'm thinking I won't be moving it once it's in situ. So should still last a fee years. So am hoping it should still be ok. I'm also thinking if it all goes wrong i can always swap it out for some cheap hose pipe instead.
My thinking of using this is there will be more water sitting in the heater at any one time than a narrower bore hose. Although this may neccesitate a longer length of hose to maintain heat transfer. It's already black so saves me having to paint it. The wall between the coils is fairly thin, so should help with heat transfer. And it has a bigger surface area than standard hose - due to the coils.
Just have to decide on the right pump now. And I am still looking into a way to automate it so the pump only turns on once the air temp in the heater hits a certain temp - for some reason I have the figure of 40C in my head.

Sounds doable and I am sure the larger hose will work with longer dwell times, and 40 deg is easy mine can go off the scale at 55 deg and return around 26 from that.

29 degree's that's good John, with current temps i am getting between 26 and 28 degrees with a litre every 75 to 85 seconds, have not had much time past few days with the pond, from the weekend onwards i should be out there a bit more....... pond temp is like a yo yo which is not great, went to 18.9 and been back to 16.7 today back upto 18c

I'm getting there building mine.
I'm waiting for the acrylic cover to turn up. Then just a case of trialling a couple of pumps I already have and hopefully it does the trick.
