Nice job on your DIY RDF, by the way, although I'd encourage you to use it for a year or more before selling them to other people, just to be sure it performs without undue wear & tear (motor, drum seal, pump, control electrics, etc.). As I'm sure you're aware, a surprising chunk of the cost of many commercial RDFs is the control electronics, so that's one area your simpler design can save a few hundred quid, but it carries a burden of responsibility - one needs to thoroughly test that the control of an RDF is truly reliable, longterm, or customers run the risk of losing a larger investment in the fish themselves.

No you are correct no drum should spin that fast , mine is 8rpm and it can be adjusted via power supply unit by adjusting the voltage output to motor thats crazy fast either is mesh isn't fine or its just useless

mine has been running for 1 month now and ironed out a fault with a float switch that was too sensitive where it would keep activating the cleaning cycle.
the only other issue is a design fault on the drum water inlet where the seal pushes against the internal wall because I didnt have a sheet metal roller to roll the drum round as the structure of the drum itself came as a sheet - flat and I manually bent it round this caused the water seal to sometime catch the internal wall and the come out and gradually the steel edge has worn through the rubber seal.

for customers drums im investing in a 1000mm long slip rollers to roll perfect drums and make the internal wall aperture 15mm smaller diameter which will prevent this ever happening again .

with my own drum ive got a much bigger seal to install which will prevent it coming out

the rubber it self will not get worn out as its only just kissing the wall to create a seal and the stainless steel is in a polished finish so doesn't produce an abrasive friction over the month its been installed a grime slimy layer is coating the seal which is actually lubing the seal

the controls are the same as someone else who sell plans for drum filters made from wood and these controls are reliable as proven and anyone that has any problems will get free replacement parts I have no problem with that.
if the system is turn off and turned back on it carries on from where it left off on a pre set level .

motors are well proven and are big brand item with a proven track record , I wont include inferior pumps/motors or electronics .

yes I fully understand where your coming from and have put about 12 months or research into this im happy to take a hit in the pocket its highly unlikely someone will lose fish over a drum failure even when I installed mine for the first time 3 days I had to manually clean the drum myself as I brought an incorrect trigger timer module that I couldn't programme and during this time I still had water coming through the mesh as its so fine and I just turned down the flow of my pump to min flow while I waited for the correct module to arrive. and I stopped feeding the fish

their isn't actually much to these filters I fount this very easy to make and install but then manufacturing is my skill set so do this is a walk in the park for me.

Mark what I like about your drum project.
Is you sound very honest. And upfront.
By telling that you had problems.
    Which you have rectified.
A lot would nt admit this. Good on you mate. Good luck with the project mate.

Thank you Freddyboy for your kind words and support
thats my nature mate honesty is the best policy as they say lol I have nothing to gain by telling lies and I only tell it as it is . some people may look away by me admitting ive had minor issues

im very proud of my rum filter especially my welding as its taken a lot of time and energy to do this completely on my own everything is fully welded including inlets/outlets and with no leaks first time but then I expect my work to be of the highest quality otherwise I wouldn't of been an aerospace tig welder welding Rolls Royce critical Jet engine components worth £100,000's

their is only one manufacturer out there who manufacturers their filters from stainless steel and their starting price is £4500 for one that has similar spec as mine only just looks very fancy/refined though in a very short time scale I will catch up to their level of quality , thats a given.
ProfiDrum Stainless 55 Drum Filter - ProfiDrum Stainless Drum Filters

my entry level drums start from £800 - £1200 which is the same performance as the above but for a fraction of the cost
some times people can be put off by being too cheap lol I mean mine are cheaper than entry level plastic drums lol almost looks like it doesn't add up
ive got 2 people that say they want one soon but they could decide not to in the end for what ever reason.

I will be making myself a bio chamber soon approx. size 900mm x 900mm x 1200mm and will upload photo's and video when installed

I will upload a video of my pond's water clarity very soon is bang on to be fair and my fish look very happy
