Thread: new pond build

    new pond build

hi all going to be swapping out a 12foot by 6foot 1.2m deep raised pond to a much bigger more natural pond in ground pond
new pond is going to be 6m x 3m by 1.5m deep
question is i have an oase gravity fed drum filter which i belive will be unusable now its going in the ground without building a filter pit which is not happening
i would like to keep the bottom drain in so do i just put a chamber under ground below the water level for the pump to sit in and pump to filters uv ect
new pond will have 55wuv to easypod back to pond
skimmer to bakki shower to pond
and pump to bog filter to waterfall to pond
i thinking that would be enough or would i need mechanical filter before easy pod cilus maybe

    thanks

The drum would be fine as long as its set at the same depth as the water level as in so the water level is correct in the drum and thats where the drum sits. I would personally reconsider not using gravity as it is a far better system and you can then have your filters hidden. Plus, having pump fed means you're probably going to have a lot more fines in the water due to the pump mushing up the crap.
If you are able to make a chamber underground for the pump why not just have a drum there then you can pump up to the filters and have it return via gravity? I might be wrong but don't see why that wouldn't work?

So bottom drain to drum, pump the other side of the drum up to whatever bio filters you want to use then have the water return via gravity?

I would still look at a filter pit over any other way personally though. If you planned it correctly you could have a small filter pit with a drum and moving bed then pumped return which wouldn't take much space, you could use long handles on valves etc but the tighter it is the more awkward any maintenance would be.

    Thanks for your reply samp09
i totally agree that the gravity fed drum in a pit would be much better but unfortunately the ideal place for the new pond is quite limited unless I compromise on pond space which I’m not keen on and the wife wants to build a bbq area next to it 🙄
I’ve moved the above ground pond out of the way and was using the drum as you suggested but had problems with keeping the water level right it’s was constantly dropping causing the drum to be constantly on which I sort of knew would happen

think my options are as you say best to have a pit with gravity fed or reluctantly pump feed with filters above ground

thanks for the advice I have a week to ponder before the digger arrives 😂
