Thread: Epoxy options

    Epoxy options

Noi koi, my apologies, but I thought this would be a good place to ask.

I have a 3000l indoor tropical pond, wood frame and ply lined. It's been running just over 2 years now.

In summer I want to strip it back to the carcass and redo it with light blue epoxy instead of a liner, and install a viewing window. But I'm reading less than great things about epoxy pond paint!

What would be the best option for doing this and the best sealant for installing the window please?

The reason for the blue epoxy is mainly for the colour - many of my fish in there are dark and it's hard to really enjoy them - but also because I want to add a couple of features into the structure (shallow trough for growing houseplants where the fish can't eat them, built in step).

Being indoors it's not going to be so subject to changes in temperature; will that make any difference or should I look at including fibreglass in the epoxy?

I don't know much about sealing ponds with epoxy. I have heard scenarios where it hasn't stood the test of time, but I'm sure there's lots of ponds that are doing just fine with it.

If budget allows you could consider having it fibreglassed with a blue gel coat. Shouldn't be majorly expensive for a 3000 litre pond.

    Fibreglass it properly.
I can't stand the thought of those epoxy paints the yanks use to do their plywood tanks. YouTube is full of leaking ones, where they separate at the seams, why does nobody learn? If they always leak eventually, don't do it. Fibreglass will be preferable mainly because it is providing flexible structure to a point. Two layers of 450mat on the walls, an extra couple layers for a couple of inches over the seams and that will last forever.
Gel coat can be mixed in any colour.

Also, you need to feed us photos.

Whereabouts do you live? If you don't fancy DIY, then one of us on here can usually let you know a pond fibreglasser that could do it.
