    Changing filters

I currently have a Kockney koi Multi chamber 10000v on a 9000l pond. I’ve been told that when the koi get bigger the 10000v will need to be replaced (I currently have 4 koi at about 25cm and growing, thinking about 4 more next year when weather warms up). So thinking of a nexus 220 or 220+. My question is, how do you change filters without losing the benefit of beneficial bacteria on existing filter? Do you have to run the new filter along side the existing? If so, that’s complicated in terms of pipe work surely? Could I risk new pond syndrome with a replacement filter with the number of koi I have?

put the new media from the nexus in the pond or filter for a few weeks/months in warmer pond temps to mature in mesh bags.
    before swapping the filters over.
its what i did when i swapped my filters this year...

As above I would mature the media in the pond well before you switch your filters over.

If that is not practical (I guess there will be a lot of media to mature to fill a nexus) then an alternative is fishless cycling.

To do that, you basically put the media in a clean Wheely bin or similar container filled with water. Stick some bacteria gel in to seed the media and an air stone to get it rolling.

Then you need to periodically add ammonia. Test the water and once the ammonia drops to very low levels, add some more ammonia. That will get the media matured fairly quickly, especially if you do that in a garage or somewhere a bit warmer than outside temps.

I did this for a moving bed filter for my grow on tank and it worked really well.

Fishless cycling is worth considering for new media
