    SteveW's Pond Build Diary

Broke ground yesterday (29th March) on my 4500 gallon pond, torrential rain here the day before, heavy clay so not ideal digging conditions. Its close to the house but base of pond does not extend below base of house footings.

Day 4 I think! Almost done digging, just got to tidy up the closest edge. 3 grab lorry loads so far, think it will need 4 altogether. 1 ton digger is not really big enough for a 1.2m deep hole, added to the fact I have to cart all the spoil with a power barrow to the front of the house. Anyone who even considers digging something like this by hand is either superhuman or insane. Plan was to pump concrete friday but i'm still waiting on a bottom drain so hopefully next tuesday. Once I have blocks up to ground level and the surrounds reinstated I will be happier.

    Hi Steve,
I know what you mean about reinstating the surrounding area of the pond bud, it's a nightmare trailing the mud everywhere

Bottom drain pressure test- the pipework is easy to test with a bung, no problems there, but i can't figure out how to test the bottom drain itself-putting the bung in the pipe where it joins the bottom drain bypasses the connection between the drain and the pipe and obviously the drain itself. I tried a sheet of rubber with board and blocks ontop but I can't get a waterproof seal! Concrete in 4 days so running out of time! Any suggestions?
