Good spot John
Should have shown you a photo of where my pond is going before I started digging as you'd have probably spotted all the roots I'm currently fighting with lol________________________________________________

That痴 a very good point John thank you, it does bow out quite a lot there. I値l get the hedge trimmer out and cut back and see how it stands. I値l bring it in a bit if not. Also got quite a bit of cutting back of the apple tree as do not want any of that getting in the pond. Although I知 sure koi would demolish apples.
One thing I知 stuck on if you don稚 mind is the skimmer. Should it run on its own line into the settlement chamber or join the bottom drain line? I want to go for a 4 inch bottom drain so I知 ready to go when I upgrade to the gravity drum etc. Looking to get the concrete in this weekend hopefully then commence digging. Maybe borrowing a neighbours mini digger

Some have skimmers on their own separate system and others have theirs on with the main system. Mine was separate on my old pond but still thinking which way to go on the new pond. My thinking is if one system stops working at least you've got something still working to give some water movement.

I think it depends on what you are feeding directly from the skimmer. If it's a pump then 1.5 or 2 inch is required but if its a sieve or a filter then you might need to go 3 or 4 inch. Most standard skimmers have a small outlet but can be modified to fit bigger pipes. There's a sticky thread on here showing how to do it but when I last checked it the photos had gone.

I think it's just a description now but was sure there were photos on there before unless I am thinking about another thread were someone else has done the same thing more recently?

What are you planning with waste drainage? I知 trying to figure out what to do as I知 right at the back of garden away from any drains. The back of my garden is a pub on lots of land. Directly behind there is a mini forest, with a rainwater gulley flowing along the lenght of back fences, must be a saftey thing for flooding. Next door have a big drain pipe sticking out back entering the gulley. Must be to help the garden with heavy rain. Would it be a total no to run my waste into the gulley? I知 guessing it would stink over time and not allowed as it痴 not rainwater but pond waste water?!

It's a tricky one as you are allowed to dump pond water into certain types of drains I think and I have what I believe is a set of drains running under the patio with a drain cover very close to where the filters are going to go so could use that? In the previous house I just pumped the waste into a couple of water butts and then emptied it onto the lawn. The lawn was always green even in the middle of summer. Just not too keen to do that at this house as I don't want to wash the soil away under the ground and find something falls away a few years down the line.
What you are getting rid of is dirty water but probably no different from what comes off your roof or drive into that drainage system. Our's is part of the main drainage system so I could use that when doing filter cleans etc and have an overflow system which empties into the flower bed somewhere.________________________________________________

I use my filter waste to feed and water my roses. They grow like triffids on it.
I'm lucky in that my soil is basically pure sand a couple of feet down so I never get waterlogged though.

Our previous house was built on a filled in gravel pit so once we dug 6" to 12" down past the top soil we started to hit the gravel so that drained quickly too.

So my new Kockney koi skimmer arrived 4 days early. I知 winging it a bit, lots of research on settlement chambers. I知 thinking 2 bins connected with a 4 inch pipe mid level first full on filter matting then the second clear where the pump will sit. I知 thinking of putting it on a ball valve 2 inch pipe so I can determine draw, but leaving the bottoms drain on the kill switch so I can stop flow to purge the bins. Any thoughts of this? I sort of have an idea but unsure on flows as it痴 my first stab at this. Cheers

Any chance of a drawing or photos so I can have a better idea of what you are trying to do.
Had to take the cat Aura this afternoon and leave her in till Monday as she stopped eating then came home and spent about 2 hours digging so I'm a bit tired at the moment________________________________________________

Thanks, she's got to stay at Aura in Guildford for another day but seems to be doing as well as can be expected.
That drawing looks OK although you need something to hold the media in the first chamber or it will end up in your pond plus I'd go for ball valves on any waste outlets because they are more reliable.
You might need some kind of prefilter before the first chamber or it will just full the media with muck very quickly specially as it's being fed from a BD and a skimmer.________________________________________________

I was thinking the first bin is full of Japanese matting and brushes to catch all the crap then the second bin clear with the pump in it, so less chance of it getting clogged. Then the pump feeds water to the uv then nexus above ground. Then gravity back to a waterfall with more matting to further remove fines.
Nice one re ball valves, that痴 a good tip.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
