Do I need a one way check valve?
Hi please see pic below. External pump is located above water level. Priming pot to prime pump...
Inlet from pond is below water level and runs underground and then comes our to pump house (which is above water level).
I can prime the pump via a priming pot/chamber.
Question is would I need a one way/check valve as per picture?
Thanks.

Looking at your diagaram you would not be able to fill the priming pot without a valve-it would just run back to the pond. Ideal place for the valve would be on the inlet pipe as close to the pump as possible at water level and installed with a split union. Definitely needs to be easily accessible-any debris could prevent the valve closing making it impossible to prime.

Thanks Steve o thought as much.
So to that I’d need a chamber in the pump room that was underground. Limited space so that could be tricky.
I do need some kind of strainer on the pond inlet and whilst looking found this ‘foot valve strainer’
This would be fitted on the inlet in the pond.
It looks like it would solve two issues at once?
Check valve and strainer, and would also allow access for maintenance as it would be accessible in the pond if required?

Looks good, perhaps attach to some flexile hose so you can easily get the check valve above water level in pond for cleaning?
