    New house, new pond.

I've been a bit quiet on here recently due to a house move.

The biggest surprise is AJ hasn't become the highest poster on here yet

My initial plan is to get a medium to long term solution sorted ASAP as I've currently got all my fish in the 500 gallon QT system in the garage. Fortunately it was stripped down, removed from the previous garage and rebuilt in the new place in a couple of weeks unlike the original 2 to 3 year build time!

I just want to get something up and running ASAP before the weather changes too much so was thinking about using something like a 4000 litre round tub from Ponds4fish, then early next year start on the proper pond. I was thinking I could then use the 4000 litre tub as a veggie filter to help with Nitrate and Phosphate removal once the proper pond gets built.

I'm looking to use the 4000 litre tub with a bottom drain to an Eazy Pod, then the 600 litre IBC bio chamber and maybe pump back into the tub via the large Clarity protein skimmer seeing as I've already got them all just sitting ready to be reused.

The heights of the tub and filters should be easy to get right as I'm not intending to go into the ground with the tub unless I really have to as I've been informed by the guy next door that there's potentially an old site access road not far under the surface running behind the back of the houses. As we are slightly further back than they are it's possible the buried road might not be as far out as where the tub will go but I won't know that until I start digging!!! As I'm going to be fitting a BD to the tub my concern is how do I support the bottom of the tub where the BD pipework goes under it so it doesn't give way over time? I think I'm going to have to fit the BD and pipe work to get out past the side of the tub then put the tub in position which will leave a gap between the bottom of the tub and the top of the BD pipework. The bottom of the tub is fairly flexible so it might be possible to lift the tub slightly without lifting the pipework and then back fill the trench with gravel? Another option would be, depending on the gap, to slide some rectangular slabs under there? Any ideas or opinions on the best way to go?

As I get more ideas or further along in the build I'll add some photos.

BTW this build is going to be a bit quicker than the QT build as it's not a secrete squirrel one

Well I'm back but trying to sort out various things at the same time so may not have enough time to be on here as much as before.

Some say, that's a good result for them lol

Welcome back. I’ve got a large round QT with a bottom drain- I support it to make room for the pipework underneath on a bunch of concrete blocks stood on their sides with some ply on top with a cutout where the BD and BD pipe go. Mine is made of pretty thick plastic so is not prone to deforming very much tbh.

    Thanks Sam.

Well not enough time unfortunately, what with sorting through boxes, trying to get work in and done and then chasing people for money!

    Thanks Lara.

I was going to measure the gap between the BD pipework and the bottom of the QT tank but then remembered that's reduced straight away from 4" to 3" so the gap would be bigger so would need to measure some 4" and 3" to see exactly what the difference should be if that makes sense? But it sounds like what you've done would work for my potential setup

Not had much chance to get things done recently other than cut down the bush where I want the filters to go. I've recently been told but not actually found out that below the top soil there is chalk. Maybe a good thing for mounting the tank? But most likely a pain to dig through without the right equipment? Hopefully going to get the tub ordered sometime this week and then see if it's possible to make a start on the digging if it's not frozen solid from all the cold weather!!

Will be following this thread! I have a 10,000litre poly pond and I've wondered how I will go about putting the BD on and support it. I'm hoping a trench only just bigger than the pipe will be enough support as it is way too heavy to lift and backfill.
    Goodluck!

I'm still not sure on that but as I said to Aj in a pm recently, I was considering going pump fed as long term I intend to use the pond I'm hoping to get going soon as a veggie filter so actually you're both right possibly lol

Are BD giving way on plastic/poly pond common? Think you've made me want to re-think my design lol! I thought once it was all attached and water in, it'd be solid

Not heard of any yet but just had to ask the question as to what was the best option.

My issue is I have to try to part bury the pond, then dig a slightly deeper channel for the BD and pipework to sit in and unless I can put something between the top of the pipework and the bottom of the pond I'm worried out there being an unsupported channel under the pond. I don't think I can go the traditional route of installing the BD and pipework first, then burying the pipework and then fitting the BD to the bottom of the pond as it's going to be very difficult to line up the pond, the BD and the fixing for the BD to the pond. It would be easier to fit the BD and pipework to the bottom of the pond then put it in the hole. Moving the pond will probably be at least a 2 person job as it weighs 80 kg and that's without the BD and pipework attached
