Got another 1/2 bulk bag dug out this afternoon. Cut off some of the roots where they go into the ground or into the wall on the far side of the hole. I'd say a spade depth down 2/3 of the way across now. That was hard going in places as I think it was either scalpings or what I believe is called MOT? It's like tarmac but without the sticky pitch in it as digging down into it the spade bounces off but digging into the side of it breaks it up easier.
Will put some photos on later if I can.________________________________________________

the joys of pond digging....
i conscripted my lad into helping with mine, but still ended up doing most of it myself...

It's not so much the digging apart from trying to get through the MOT? stuff, it's having to dig it, wheelbarrow it away to a bulk bag knowing it's then got to be put back in the wheel barrow and moved out to the front of the house once I get a skip delivered.

That was hard going !!
About a spade depth down all the way across now.
Running out of space to put the bulk bags so may need a skip soon?
If it's not too wet tomorrow I'll have a go with a pick axe or a Mattock to see if I can get a decent depth down.
I cut some of the ends of the roots off so they could be pushed out of the way when I was digging.
Got to upload the photos later and put them on here if I've got enough energy to make it up the stairs________________________________________________

Might have been an option before I started digging properly but can't face digging anymore than I need to now unless something forces me to move the pond over. I was looking at it's positioning earlier today and thought apart from the roots, being in the shade of the tree during the middle of the day could be a real bonus in the summer.
Just been checking out how deep that MOT layer is likely to be assuming it is that, and it could be between 100mm and 150mm then there's probably hard core under that!!!!!!!!!________________________________________________

Thanks for your input BTW any ideas are always appreciated.
Another reason I put the pond there was the filters can sit on the patio hidden beside the brick BBQ. I thought the flower bed would have been an easy dig if I need to bury any pipework.
Some of what I've already dug is fairly soft but other bits are like trying to did through solid concrete and the spade just bounces off________________________________________________

There's side access but it's only 500mm. The only other option would be to take a section of fence down at the bottom of the garden between our fence and the brick wall of the neighbour's garage and possibly get something through there? I know the fence is less than 4ft wide but more than 3ft wide as if I'd have got the 4000 litre version of the pond I have it would have gone through the gap. Just need to remeasure that bit of fence.
Would a mini digger get through those roots what ever the solid stuff is in the hole. How deep can you go with them? The problem I'd then have would be I'd be getting loads of soil out with nowhere to put it and someone else would need to be around to spot that the digger isn't going to dig up anything it shouldn't.
It's a bit of a tricky one as if I carry on as I am I'll get it done but will take ages and will probably kill me off in the process! If I get a digger in or someone to dig it for me I'll need side access and 2 or 3 skips which will put the cost right up. I was looking into skips yesterday and from what I can tell the biggest one you can have that you are allowed to put soil in is a 6 yard skip. It's going to need at least 2 of those I'd think going by how much has already been taken out and how far I've dug down so far.________________________________________________

Yeah I see what you mean, it’s amazing how compacted dirt translates when excavated. Another tip someone gave me was to keep the dirt real dry, even save it until the heat of the summer covered then get a grab lorry to remove from the drive as they go on weight, 16 tonnes max. He said it was unreal the difference in 2 loads one soaking wet and one dry. Next door have just had foundations dug by the mini digger I might borrow. It did all this in a day, and recon it could get down to 5-6 feet. Seemed to chomp through anything like butter. Not too sure on the thick roots they might need a saw to it.

Yes I know as the previous pond we dug about 10 years ago was 3500 litres and we only dug that about half way into the ground but the hole was about 2m round by 1m deep and that filled 6 bulk bags. Should have only been about 3 or 4 going by the size of the pond and it not going fully in.
Need to do some investigation as to the best option for digging the rest of the hole out considering all the pros and cons.________________________________________________

Didn't make a start till about 12 today but using the pick axe I cleared best part of a bulk bag before stopping for lunch at 2. Had loads of emails and texts to answer which slowed me down.
Only got 1 undersized bulk bag left now________________________________________________
