Yeah exactly that but then it comes to the costs of buying the media what is not cheap if we’re talking 1000L and also the amount of air your going to need to turn it over..
From my perspective it’s all been thoroughly worked out.

the only thing i would add regarding quoted K1 filter ratios which are all based on EA's use of K1 in a nexus.
there is more to a biological filter than just ammonia and nitrite processing.
if that were the case as soon as you had cycled a filter a pond would be fully mature.
the biofilm is a living eco system in it's self,
with many different types of bacteria and microscopic life living with, and off each other.
that takes years to fully mature
so imo you can't have too big a filter...
even if the pond was 10,000 litres and the filters were 100,000 litres with 50,000 litres of K1
and yes, the pic below isn't the pond.... it's the bio chamber

Blimey that's a bit much. Having a window on a bio filter lol.

I've seen a few large monster aquarium tanks with windows into the moving bed. It's quite mesmerizing watching it turn over constantly.

Have a look at the old 'similar to k1' media thread. Look for the k1 alternative that was very good .
https://www.koiforum.uk/water-treatm...urglar+similar
Check out the cheap versions on ebay. Look for the one with the centre piece.
Under the microscope it was certainly equivalent to K1', maybe better due to added surface area of centre section. Other alternatives were shite.

Here's some pretending to be K1, which inadvertently looks like the good cheaper version.

You can buy it really cheaply from ali express, but the minimum quantities are quite high from memory.
I would say the K+ is better than normal K1.
Micro K1 will offer even more surface area for the same volume, butnot easy to find.Last edited by RS2OOO; 28-03-2023 at 04:07 PM.

Mikes new pond build
Thanks for suggestions, I think I will end up just adding my matured media
50L k1,
25L hel x 13
30L oase pond pads
Then will Chuck another 100L k1+
I’ll likely then add a 50L bag each time I add a new koi.

When Sam p got some k+ was talking to a dealer about it . And price per surface area the k1 came out best bit more money but lots more surface

If bio space is limited pond pads are imo far superior for surface area

Managed to make a start to the moving bed chamber, I have decided that I am going to pump from drum to chamber and then gravity return at water level after a few chats.
Still a few bits to work out but making progress gain what feels good

If gravity returning from bio to pond remember the bio chamber water level will be slightly higher than the pond.
My old anoxic section had 2x 2" tank connectors at water surface level and above 6k lph the anoxic section ran about 1" higher than the pond. At 20k lph it would overflow as the 2x 2" outlets were simply not adequate for gravity feeding at that level of flow.
That chamber would make a fantastic fry rearing facility

Filtreau Drum Motor & Gearbox
Hi, I’ve just replaced the gearbox on my Filtreau drum filter and mine was also slightly different....
