Question What size air and water pumps should I be looking at?

    Afternoon,

Getting to the final stages of the pond build and need to sort out water and air pump(s). Can someone give me some advice about what size and/or how many I need please? Pond is roughly 3m x 3.6m x 1.9m, so around 19k litres / 4300g. Bottom drain with Nexus 310 and potentially a sieve, skimmer included but no idea what to do with it yet. No idea on stocking levels yet but will be buying small and looking for fish in need of re-homing so lets say low to start with. The pond is currently half full of water and has about 40 small goldfish rescued from the garden pond

    Air:
Do I use one air pump to feed both nexus and BD or do I need two? What size(s) would be needed please? I assume it's just a case of air/clear tubing, manifolds and little valves to get it all connected?

    Water:
Will a 20k pump be sufficient (two if I use the sieve)? I guess this will give a maximum turnover every one and half hours. I've got 2" pressure pipe for the returns.

The next question would be what pumps to buy? As ever, cost is a major consideration.

    Any help gratefully received :-)

    Regards,

    Kris.

To start off with you could go with one of these which are good value to get you started and surprisingly quiet compared to some of the pricier brands, Jebao PA 100 split with circa 60% to the Nexus and 40% to the pond:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182305812...3ABFBM8o266slf

It should cover your needs for the first year to 18 Months while stocking is low and the Koi are small, but come summer 2023 when the Koi have grown you may find a need for a 2nd pump.

I've got a 40l on my BD (1.6m deep) and a 150lpm on my Nexus 310, split between 6 half can airstones (original air ring couldn't take my hard water and blocked). The BD air pump I also tee off to the Nexus as in winter I have a tiny trickle of air into the BD and summer more...cheers

You make a good point about the air stones - You get a lot more bang for buck by using air stones in the nexus instead of the air ring.

60lpm with air stones was giving me significantly more momentum/boiling in the Nexus compared to 80lpm on the original air ring which still had the odd dead spot.

    Afternoon,

Anyone else have any comments on air and water pumps? I've just bought a Jebao variable 22000l water pump from a friendly chap on here

My next question is about connecting the water pumps to the 2" pressure pipe for my returns. The pump has 2" inlet and outlet, but does that mean it will fit onto a 2" female threaded pressure pipe fitting? Should I be using a 'socket union glue female thread' and glue it all up, or a 'socket plain - female thread' with a 2" rubber connector? Or something else?!

    Cheers,

    Kris.

people use different methods for connecting pumps,
hose adaptors that come with the pumps,
    hard piping with pressure fittings,
or winding ptfe tape into the threads and using a rubber boot directly onto the pump.

i did originally hard pipe my pumps (30,000 and 20,000 varios) with female thread/sovent weld unions.
but you get a fair bit of vibration through the pipe....
so i added Flexseal butyl rubber EPDM boots/bends to reduce vibration.

Thanks Dave. I did wonder about the rubber for some vibration isolation.
