Getting out of a deep pond after falling in
Hi All
A question on 'steps/rungs" to get out of a deep pond having fallen in.
Our 10m x 2x 2 pond is nearly complete after what has been an age.
We've forgotten tout in rungs . steps to get ourselves out on the eventuality someone falls in.
We're looking for simple Stainless Steel ( or similar) rungs/steps rather than a traditional swimming pool set up.
Has anyone seen a 'standard' offering or advise of an alternative methodology ?
Thanks in advance.

Plastimo produce a roll out safety ladder that stows away in a bag & could be secured to a pergola or copings and pulling the chord would deploy the ladder.

I can't say I have seen anyone putting these in the pond as it gives the fish something to damage themselves on. I guess it depends how far the pond is from the top of the walls too, mine is only about 3-4 inches so I would simply pull myself out easily although won't be too comfortable on the coping stones, I need to add foam to them as well to prevent the fish knocking against them.

In my own case the stainless steel window frames have an internal cill with the glass flush to the outer wall, this gives a step up to pull oneself out.
If falling in and subsequent exit would be difficult maybe even a loft ladder secured & stowed maybe on adjacent decking or fixtures would be an option if getting out is a concern.
Maybe using a rope ladder used on childrens garden climbing frames would work

@DavetheFish1, @Mike Bass, @Samp09. Thank You everyone for replying. I've been on the case on this one for a few hours yesterday and your input has been really helpful.
a) I dont intend falling in; then again I never intended getting married.
b) I dont want steps as they look like a big invitation to herons as wading ledges/ resting points for the koi
c) If I built a fence Id want to get the other side of it!
d) We're in our 60s snd with the pond side we wouldn't be able to pull our selves up so some safety required
d) ow told that I should not re-drill the wall as the finish I polyester and it will ruin it ( surely it can be redone)?
e) Plastimo make 'rungs' as well .. but none available until March earliest ( although could be fabricated I'm sure)
f) The "Emergency" ladder solution looks like a great short-term solution but so ugly!
I' still looking for a long term solution so if anyone can think of other options ... great.
Thanks so much everyone, that was really helpful ..

Another solution would be to have a set of aluminium steps adjacent to the pond with a rope
attached that could be pulled into the pond only if needed then place on the floor of the pond ( rubber feet on the base of the stepladder) then climb out.
When my partner swam in the pond to check it out for the first time, this is how she was able to get out (even with a hip damaged when falling off a horse)

If the pond is still being built, then I personally would cement a few bricks stacked up on to their ends into one corner of the pond, so that they create a small foot hold (rather than a big ledge) about 70cm below the water line.
That way you will have a foothold to climb out of the pond with (make sure there will be a hand hold outside of the pond close by e.g. a large rock that won't move with your body weight) but it would be too deep for a heron to use it as a ledge to fish from.
Once the bricks are in place, you'll probably need to cover them in pir insulation board so you can round the corners off. Then you'd need to fibreglass over them.
I nearly did that with my pond, bit then didn't bother in the end as my pond is raised and i'd be able to climb out anyway if I were to fall in, as the water line is just below the copings.

@Twhitenosugar
Unfortunately the pond is finished and all polymer-coated so not an easy fix that I know about.

Ah. Shame. But personally, I would see how much it would cost to do, as I think that's 100% better solution than having a set of steps/ladder going into the pond or sitting by the pond.
For the fibreglasser, it shouldn't be a huge job to do.

Personally I can get out a swimming pool without using steps, and I know I can get out of my pond because I swam in it when I first built it
Can I ask what situations you are envisaging when you might fall in? If I am walking around on my pond walls (really only reason I would do this is the change the batteries in the clock I have mounted on the filter house wall) I make sure I don’t do it when home alone. Have a water resistant phone in your pocket too. And never dive down and stick your arm in the bottom drain pipe.2016 new 6000 gallon pond
