    New House, New Pond

Fingers crossed at some point next month we will be moving into a new house, so I've started planning a new pond. I made a fair few mistakes with my current pond, it was built with sleepers and a liner. This time I would like to go bottom drained and fibre glassed.

    The pond will be 6m x 2.5m with a depth of 1.5m.
Volume roughly around 22500 litres or 5000 gallons

1/ Oase Proficlear Premium Large off the bottom drains
    2/ K+Advance 20 or 24 off the skimmer line
    3/ 2 x bottom drains
4/ 4x inlets, plus waterfall. 2 inlets plus waterfall off the main filter, 2 inlets of the K+Advance
5/ Reed bed for extra filtration, plus a shallow planting pond, more for decoration.
6/ 2 x UV off the main filter

Haven't built anything like this before, my current pond is very simple with a bottom pump into a Oase Filtoclear, back through UV into a reed bed, then back into the pond.

Would my suggestion work? Am I missing anything?
It does all feel a little overselling for me, and I am going to look at getting a professional to help with the build, especially the fibre glassing and pipe work.

Looks good Marky, your pond dimensions are almost the same as mine.

Couple of things occur to me. I don't know much about bead filters but am guessing you don't want to send leaves and larger floating debris through them? My skimmer feeds into my drum and works well.

Also look at increasing bio filtration, eg shower or moving bed, and think about using (placing) your pond returns to create circular flow around each BD in harmony with each other. I have three underwater returns, about 8-12" off the bottom. One is on a 'long' side pointing straight into the pond between the two BDs, and the other two in corners creating the clockwise/counter clockwise flow.

Hope it goes well whatever you choose to do.

I just assumed the skimmer would have basket or something to catch large debris, but I suppose you run the risk of this blocking and then the K+ could run dry. (more research needed)

I'm not sure at all were to put the inlets to create the best circulation, but have been told to have them at different heights though. Also were would the optimum skimmer location be.

Hi Marky. If your whole water column is rotating from the bottom up, not sure why you'd place returns higher?

If you follow my suggestion on the returns, keep your return on the long side as you have it now (but place it exactly between the BDs), your skimmer could go on the wall you have it marked now, but opposite the return between the BDs, or could have it bottom left corner of pond.

Would you mind just sending me a couple of pics? My only logic with the returns is having them below ground level so you can't see any pipe work. The pond will roughly be 60% in the ground.

I'm thinking about simplify the filtration to something like this instead.

That wouldn't work. Don't tie the skimmer lines into the BD lines as you'll ruin the flow rate and have no control, and the pump is in the wrong place, needs to be straight after the drum. But I don't know what the proficlear with UV is. And there's no bio in this, but as I say, don't know what the proficlear/uv thing is, but assume not bio as has uv in it. I'll try and dig out a couple of construction pix of my pond to hopefully show you what I did.

Worst sketch ever but this is the schematic of my pond, generally. Hope you get he gist. The return pipework is tucked into the curved corners of the pond so nothing visible outside of the pond. Sorry, can't work out how to upload photos :-/

There's a pump between the drum and the bio, and between the drum and the shower, not shown, oops.

Thank you, that makes sense. So the Oase Proficlear is a Drum, with bio, plus you can added additional modules if needed. There is one Module with additional filtration an UV neatly inside the unit. I also already have the UV that you can fit attach on my current system.
