Side drain ??
Hi all I'm looking to change filter set up in the spring , just chucked out the retro bottom drain as it kept getting clogged and broke the pump .
My choice is pump fed or a 3in side drain through the side of the pond into filter shed .
Can anyone see any problems I can get going with a side drain I've seen one working on a similar pond to mine in maidenhead aquatics in Southport so I know it works .

Hi
I think you would need to do a retro bottom drain with a 3 inch pipe exiting below the water level and I believe this would turn it into a gravity fed system. just won't be a neat as a bottom drain under the pond floor with no pipe work in the pond, but the next best thing, once full of algae the pipe in the pond will be less visible. If you don't draw water off the pond floor you will get a build up of muck on the pond bottom and this might lead to issues with nasties living there

It's one of the things I'm trying to work out the pond in maidenhead floor is clear from muck and the fish are heavily fed and run on a drum filter ,going to ask them next time I pop in to see how it works from what I've seen it's a 4inch pipe about 6 inch off the bottom through the side and into the drum pipe has what looks like 1inxh holes all around.

Hi
Maybe they keep the floor vacuumed - the thought of a pipe 6 inches off the bottom would worry me as the fish could catch their backs on it as they swim around and damage themselves

Hi,
I used to visit a koi dealer in Darlington and he ran his ponds using an underwater side drain with a vertical T piece attached. Bottom pipe was a couple of inches off the floor and the top acted as a skimmer.
What made this work was the sloped base of the pond though - sloping towards the bottom pipe which encouraged debris to head that way.
Worked really well but never seen that design anywhere else.

If I go down the route of a new retro bottom drain then hard pipe through the side of pond into filter shed , could I run it into a sieve first then pump to filters ect ? Or would pump have Togo before sieve.

Hi
The retro bottom drain will work on gravity if you go 3 inch pipe and exit low enough down the pond wall and into a mechanical filter then bio and pumped back to pond via a UV - perfect even throw a tower in if you like
even better

Hi Kev I'm looking at getting a draco retro fit bottom drain it's 3inch pipe work and looks a good bit of kit, planning on running it to a cetus sieve then into easy pod then pump to uv and shower. Just need to think out how to link up a tempest and bio chamber to it .

Hi Alex
Very similar to my set up - bottom drain to Easypod / UV and then 2 x 3 tray showers. One pump direct to shower from the surface skimmer 1 x pump from bottom drain to Easy Pod
1800 gallons - 8 x Koi
