Yorkpond
I am looking to build a large Koi pond myself. I know there is no specific planning law related to ponds but know there are building regulations, the problem is a cannot find them anywhere. The proposed pond will be approximately 5 meters from my home but the problem is the pond will be within about 6 to seven foot from my neighbours home foundations and about a foot from their boundary. This means I will also be placing my pump for the pond against their fence and right outside their bifolding doors and patio area. The pond is large (proposed 5.5 meters Wide and 6 foot deep. Also what do I do with drainage and soak always as I think there maybe one where I want to site it. Any links to any information greatly appreciated

Welcome, hope they like the sound of running water if you have a shower running 24 / 7
Don't think there are any planning / bye laws in relation to ponds - they tend to be part of a garden so as long as common sense and as long as you make sure the electrics are safe and the water goes to soak away or sewer you should be fine.
I made sure my pond location was close to my garage for electrics and I feed the waste water directly to where my gutter exhausts to the main drain. The re-fill is still via hose pipe, but is simple enough via a canister de-chlorinator.

I feel a chat is in order with your neighbour just to let them know and get feedback, not ask them but nicely tell them what you are doing... is that size essential with where you are trying to site it, can it not go on another boundary or the bottom of a garden, not that next door will cause problems but best limit problems where you can before the works start
Where will your filters and pumps go as that ay likely be the main source of noise ??

Thanks. The pump and filters would be placed right up against their boundary fence line and it is less than 6 foot from their living area and bifold doors and right against their patio area as they have an extension beyond ours
Is it ok for me to dig so deep so close to their foundations.
I’m also pretty sure the soak away for our storm water ( this is a requirement by our council and all the houses have them) is placed there which I will have to remove but can’t find any information about this.
The neighbours patio is higher than ours by about a foot as we are on a slight hill if they clean their patio with chemicals will they harm the fish as it could run off into the pond. Is there anything I could do about this?
We already have a frosty relationship and don’t want complaints.
Thanks

It will all depend on the natural ground makeup as to potential land movement.
From your description I would definitely consult an engineer to at least give you an idea of any future problems.
If you already have a frosty relationship with your neighbor you would be open to blame for any problems they get, even if its nothing to do with you. Having the relevant paperwork from a specialist will cover you if it ever happens.
Depending on how you are housing your pumps etc you may get complaints about noise. The modern speed controlled pumps do give off a constant whine and air pumps are even worse. They may seem pretty quiet but it will be a different story in the dead of night.
The soak away can be moved and re-piped but check building regs before deciding on the new location.
Runoff from the neighbour's patio could wipe your pond out if they use chemicals and even rain run off could cause you PH swings depending how much gets to the pond. Any chance you could raise it?

Hi
Can you draw us a plan with dimensions as to how close you are going to next doors foundations - I would say 6 foot deep too close to your house or even next doors house could end up with a subsidence situation. As state a pond can be noisy with showers and pumps running 24 / 7. Might be an idea to go raised by 3 foot sunk by 3 foot. Problem is we don't know what your house is built on you say the width, but not the length. A hole 6 feet deep only six foot from someone's house foundations frightens the hell out of me. Could end up in court if you cause a noise nuisance as between 11pm and 7am you may need to switch things off. Just google "pond pump noise nuisance" and you will see it happened a few times already add damage to their house foundations and you could be classed as a nightmare neighbour
