hacking 60%-80% of the roots away is a risk...
but you balance that by removing a lot of the top growth to lower demand on the roots.

    but they are surprisingly resilient...mostly.
some acers are grafted to vigourous rootstocks and some aren't.
i have a shiraz acer that has a very weak rootstock and has hardly grown.

here's an interesting video when you see how much of the roots were left from a very old acer dug out of the ground...

Same as John, put 10 plants in front of me and i would not be able to name one, i would end up pruning the weeds and throwing the plants away

i've just been to Aurora Koi,
it's long overdue seeing as they are not that far from me...

i met Gaz and Norton, both of them really friendly and helpful.
btw...we want to see that splash footage Gaz

and i picked up a gorgeous Yamabuki Ogon,
it's a fair old size too, easily 45cm i reckon
the fukarin is stunningly clean and bright.

Lovely choice that Dave, and a tough pic from the bowl you had there!

The old wet net and wind trick, you only do that once facing upwind when your down the lake in winter that's for sure

lo yeah, nothing like a drenching in the teeth of the wind in winter

i had the one i bought already reserved,
and someone else had already bought the lighter coloured one. which i think is female, and i believe mine is male.
there was what i think is another female there,(top right) but i prefered the male.

I probably would still choose mine over the other one,
Even though the other will probably end up bigger
