hacking 60%-80% of the roots away is a risk...
but you balance that by removing a lot of the top growth to lower demand on the roots.
but they are surprisingly resilient...mostly.
some acers are grafted to vigourous rootstocks and some aren't.
i have a shiraz acer that has a very weak rootstock and has hardly grown.
here's an interesting video when you see how much of the roots were left from a very old acer dug out of the ground...

i've just been to Aurora Koi,
it's long overdue seeing as they are not that far from me...
i met Gaz and Norton, both of them really friendly and helpful.
btw...we want to see that splash footage Gaz
and i picked up a gorgeous Yamabuki Ogon,
it's a fair old size too, easily 45cm i reckon
the fukarin is stunningly clean and bright.

lo yeah, nothing like a drenching in the teeth of the wind in winter
i had the one i bought already reserved,
and someone else had already bought the lighter coloured one. which i think is female, and i believe mine is male.
there was what i think is another female there,(top right) but i prefered the male.

Just had some mussels delivered this week,
so thought i'd give the fish a taste as usual...
Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
