My drone flew over your pond last night Dave and took a measurement with my koi measuring flux capacitor, and it measured 55cm mate.

    I'll send a courier to collect .

phase 1 of project cheapass recycle RO for pond
    so far cost = £0

all the bits and bobs are my old reef tank RO set up...
or left overs from pond build.

i actually ran it on my mains water as a dechlorinator/trickle in for my old pond,
but it got to be a pain dosing bicarb to keep ph up...
so went to straight dechlorinated water.

i'm going to start off running water through it from my dechlorinator first, to make sure everything is still working.
then make the necessary booster pump adjustments/sediment filters. to run it from a tee off a pump feed.
there are 3 x 100gpd membranes capable of about 1300 litres per day,pressure/temp dependant.
i want just over a third of that, so will probably run it for about 1 hour out of 3
as the small booster pumps are not continuous rated.

i don't intend to use it to run the ph and kh of the pond down low,
just to concentrate some of the waste water. and increase the purity of the pond water in a 50/50 mix, 500 litres dechlorinated water, 500 litres RO water
it should roughly halve my Kh but that would still leave me at around 4 as my tap water is 9

it may work, it may not, but i'm enjoying tinkering with it, as i have most of the bits already.....

I did run my old Reef RODI in the pond for a few months, but as you say, it messed with the PH too much, so I am now using a 3 stage 20inch filter set as my trickle in.

1st Stage - PP 5 Micron Sediment Filter
Polypropylene particulate to remove dirt, sand, rust and other particulates down to 5 micron.
2nd Stage - GAC Carbon Filter
Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filter to remove chlorine, organic contaminants and bad taste and odour.
3rd Stage - CTO 5 Micron Carbon Block Filter
High density coconut carbon block filter to remove chlorine, pesticides, chemicals and other contaminants down to 5 micron.

Nice setup, it will be interesting to see how you get on with it
4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick glass
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
    Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
    Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
    2 x 18,000 lh pumps
Heated from house boiler through a heat exchanger
    Idealseal MS290

    My Pond Build

if i had half decent tap water like they have in the north, wales, and west country, i wouldn't bother...

but my tap water is a witches brew of contaminants that carbon alone can't remove.
so i want to dilute the pollution by at least half, by adding RO water to the trickle in....

having an Aqua digital ph controller from my reef tank will help, as when i set it up for recycle RO
i'll have it set to cut power to the pump if the ph gets too low.
with a decent pinpoint ph probe it's pretty reliable, but cutting it 50/50 with dechlorinated high kh water it won't get that low anyway....

well i've got the old RO unit up and running,
just on the carbon filtered mains water atm...

    TDS in is 134
    TDS out is 2
the booster pump is making about 60psi (though the gauge needs to be moved or changed for a fluid filled one)
with the current standard rejection rate of 4:1 over each membrane.
but the waste water from each membrane is fed into the next membrane, so reduces the waste water down to about 2:1

it's currently making 500ml/min but think i can get that up to 1000ml/ min or more with better pressure and a lower rejection rate.
so i could probably increase the booster pump size, or decrease the waste water ratio.
once i have it running on recycled pond water.
the timer has the pump running 3 hours on half an hour off, as that is what most booster pump suppliers reccomend, to allow a cooldown period.

just need to set up the solenoid and timer for the auto flush valve. to clean the membrane.
then once it's proved it's still working fine, i'll work on connecting it up to the pond.

    little bit of a rehash,
moved the pressure gauge to inbetween the 1st and 2nd membranes to stop the needle fluttering.

and fitted the solenoid auto flush valve, and set up the timer. 7 x 5 minute flushes in the 'off' timer breaks of the booster pump.

Tested the wattage of the booster pump with the energy monitor.
    Uses just 17 watts.
    So about 25p a week....

    Cheers Steve,

because i am making changes to the water i'm adding.
i did a round of tests on the pond and tap water.

    surprised is an understatement...
i've check the tapwater quality here for 22 years due to running RO for a reef tank, and though it has changed slightly,
was always around the same 8-10 KH 5-15ppm nitrate.

just checked the tap water today to work out how much dechlorinated tap water i need to keep the KH around 3-4 after adding RO,
and the KH is only 3!

so i did a round of tests and the nitrate is now 0ppm
have severn trent suddenly decided to pump 'evian water' through thier pipes...?

also i was also always doubtful about the accuracy of the API ammonia test kits,
as they always seem to have a slight greenish cast to them never clear flourecent yellow, even though they are an identical colour with pure RO water.
so i bought a Hanna Ammonia checker for christmas, done 3 test now and all come back the same... 0.00ppm

    tap nitrate

    pond nitrate

    pond ammonia

I think the Hanna testers are the way to go, I'll be getting a Nitrate, Nitrite, and Ammonia this year before the spring comes.
I'm not sure if I would want to go down the RO route, as I don't really know enough about it concerning Koi. I used to use 50/50 RO and tap water for my tropical tanks a few year back, but I use dechlorinated water now, so done away with the RO unit.

What's your PH like using RO Dave.

You do know the French are taking the piss out of us selling us Evian water don't you. Spell it backwards .

only just started using 50/50 RO so it will be a while before i see any difference in PH, currently it's 7.6

the hanna kits save the guess work, and are one of those thing you end up getting.
i don't think i'll bother with nitrate as that will never be low enough to need that kind of accuracy,
but i will be getting a chlorine checker so make it easier to see if trace amounts of chlorine get through.

yeah we must be naive to pay that kind of money for french tap water

I can't wait until spring gets here and i can get the covers off the pond...
just filling time tweaking and playing around with things in the filterhouse until then....

changed the fill tube for the trickle in to a piece of perspex tube instead as it makes it easier to see that it's running fine...

new shelf to store more bits and bobs

i made the recycle RO connection into the bio pump return, to test it out.
and cut a 1/4" thread to connect it to the 3 pod prefilter.

it needs a bigger pump which i'm about to order, and i'm also going to change the 1/4" RO pipework for 12mm LLDPE
as i think the internal bore of the 1/4" pipe is too small at 0.17", for the suction side.
but the 1/4" threaded fitting is about the same internal diameter as the 12mm LLDPE pipe.
