The Fluke M is a lot cheaper than the Solve as well, this koi hobby is expensive though

I have never scraped gills hope I never have to but I have done loads of sedating for ulsers etc a few yrs back when I had big problems.

i thought i'd try the fluke M this time,
especially as it says it can be used at lower temperatures with winter on the way.

i was going to try the learnex pro but the shop didn't have any in,
so settled for the fluke M
i had to buy a 2 x packet as well as that was the only size they had...
Ive always thought if sedating koi killed flukes, then ill just sedate them and not bother treating..... If that makes sense Interesting read, but it would be nice to have a video of a gil scrape

first time i've found anything on a scrape...
previous gill scrapes i did, i only did one from each side and found nothing,
but you need to do at leat 2-3 for each side as most of them turned up blank.
showing that the flukes aren't evenly spread and must be clustered in certain areas they find attractive...

i've done it a few times now,
sedating i use masuizai and only long enough for the fish to stop kicking when you pick it up,
i did my kujaku that must be 60cm and it took just over a minute to go under, though every fish is different.
but 15 minutes for it to come round fully, back in the pond to swim off strongly.

i use is a wetted smooth rounded wooden lollypop stick to scrape the gills, nothing with sharp edges.
and go very very slowly to tease a bit of a mucus sample fo the gills,
athough in all the scrapes i've done there has been very little mucus and it takes a little time to get a sample not like scraping the body.
and i don't get very much mucus at all, less than 1/10th of what i get on a body scrape usually with a slight smear of blood but that is unavoidable.

never thought about videoing it, as i'm mostly on my own doing this kind of stuff and am totally focused on the koi not cameras

Picked up some stuff from Queni today,
another 20" spectrum PCB cartridge that will make 2 x 20" inline for a total of 1.5" of carbon filtration depth.
and i'll add another later to make it 2.25" of carbon filtration depth prior to the big blue.
    i've got 3 x 10" pods, then 3 x 20" pods, and then a 36" big blue now

    2 x 10" 5 micron sediment filter
    1 x 10" 1 micron sediment filter
    3 x 20" spectrum 1 micron chloramine PCB filters
    then the 36" big blue.

i also picked up a bottle of kusuri FMG to prevent any secondary infection after gill flukes.
rather not risk it through winter.

the shelves were empty of all formalin containing treatments at the shop
they store them all in the office at room temperature during winter which i was pleased to hear.
as a lot of dealers i've been to get very cold in winter as most are not heated....

the water round here is garbage mate, might as well pump it from the sewers straight into the tap....

if all you need is a 10" 3 pod to dechlorinate your pond consider yourself lucky...
bet your tapwater is low KH, low nitrate, low metal, low pesticides, low chlorine...

and you might think this set up is ridiculous and OTT...
but it is the only way i can add water without the fish going nuts flicking everywhere.

with temperatures plummeting, minus 2C expected tonight!
the pond window is basically a big radiator pumping out heat and cooling the pond down.

so i went and got an 8' x 4' sheet of 50mm foil faced polyurethane insulation board
and doubled it up with foil tape to make a 100mm thick pond insulated window cover.
with some draught proofing strip at the top to seal against the polycarbonate

the funny part was me trying to cut it into sections to fit in the car outside B&Q in gale force winds

    cheers,
i still can't believe a piddly 1kw heater is keeping my 2500 gallon pond up to 20C with it minus 1C last night...
it's using about 20kwh a day to do it mind,
but i'll start dropping the temp as soon as my FMG treatment is over....

    Nice job Dave,
looks like we have both been insulating lol..... i need to redo my window cover, its 3 years old and not fitting as well as it did, the timber edge surround i stuck between 2 sheets has fallen out so like you will be making a new one, did you just put 2 sheets together or did you leave an air gap between the 2 sheets ?

    Cheers mate,
    No air gap
I just used foil tape to stick the edge of the 2 x 50mm sheets tight together.

Same with me, my pond is 900mm from the house and 100mm from the main sewer, on the end its right on the boundary, but we have to make do with what we have
