some not so good news....
while i was striking the shuttering today i found that at the back end of the collar,
the concrete hadn't been mixed properly and there was loose sand in the middle of the collar.
i've washed out all the loose sand that i've found,
which is a small section to the right and a big section under the middle that goes nearly all the way through to the other side.
some of the concrete at the very bottom of the form is also not brilliant,
but at least it's holding together and there is a good 150mm of solid concrete over it containing the rebar.
this was the first section to be laid.
and though it looked ok when it was poured i can only assume it hadn't been mixed properly by the onsite concrete mixing truck.
as all the other concrete is rock solid.
i'm a bit dissapointed to say the least, after all the hard work to make a good job of the foundation.
i should have just bought a bulk bag of ballast and bags of cement and mixed it myself....
i'll have to try and underpin the big gap in the middle with some fine 10mm concrete.
only plus side is, this is the end that is below ground level.
so i'll be able to dig out and back fill with some more concrete.

That’s a pain mate. Having said that, doesn’t look so bad in the pictures? I’m no expert though. I’m massively over engineered on my project so a little bit like this would be ok.

I would complain to the concrete company who delivered it, might get some beer tokens back or even koi tokens!

That looks good Dave, a nice wet mix in that so it finds its way under and I am sure it will be fine , after all that hard work it does take the icing off

tied a shade sail over the pond as the algae is getting to be a problem.
i've been hoovering it out a couple of times a week.
i'm not happy with the water quality but it's the best i can do,
ammonia and nitrite had slight readings back in april but settled down again.
but the crap i used to pull out of the pond by gravity, now having no bottom drain just gets smashed up into the water.
i thought the filters would just pick it up from the pump but nothing like as much waste is being removed in the temporary pond. and it shows in murky water...
on a side note the holes are filled...
now to dig the rest of the soil out...my favorite job...

murky water...no BD, no skimmer, no UV...
it's not a pretty sight but the fish don't seem that bothered...
i'm just telling myself it's like i now have a mud pond

Just read through, sorry I'm late for the party Dave.
Looks like things are starting to take shape now, a couple more buckets of dirt and your be done .
Diggings hard work this weather mate, saying that any works hard this weather, specially when your old and retired like me . I get me boys to do everything now, I ain't got it in me no more.
There not enjoying putting my liner in the pond in this weather , but I quite enjoy watching them work .
Keep the good work up Dave, and keep them buckets moving, and in no time you have it done.
Your doing a top job mate.
Atb, Steve.

cheers Steve,
i've not got it in me no more either...this pond is proving that...
you'd think my 25 year old lad at a strapping 6ft 4 would be digging it all for me...
but he has no interest in manual labour no matter how much i try and make him
he does software programming for an insurance company. and gets a blister just from looking at a spade lol!
i spent all day today digging again...
i was a sad sight... strapped up with my knee support and back support.
even the missus felt sorry for me, helping me to carry some of the flexi tubs of dirt through the house...

... it's been an absolute grueller today...
just finished hewing, choping, and chiselling the dirt out, it's not really 'digging' as no spade was involved
but i've got the bulk of it out.
there's still some trimming of the edges, and levelling out of the bottom to do, but it's not far off done...
the skips full, so the rest will have to wait until it's exchanged on thursday for a new one.

Can't believe you've dragged it out as long as this tbh Dave! How old are your fish? They are a good size and stunning!

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
